The Airline: T'way Airlines (Formerly Hansung Airlines)
T'way Airlines (티웨이항공,Tiway hanggong) is a low-cost airline based in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea, offering scheduled flights between Seoul Gimpo Airport and Jeju International Airport.
The airline was established in 2004 as Hansung Airlines (Hangul:한성항공,RR:Hansung Hanggong), which arose out of a collaboration between the city government of Cheongju and the University of Chungcheong. The first aircraft order for an ATR 72 aircraft was placed in August of the same year.
One year later, Hansung Airlines received its AOC, thus being formally approved. The first commercial flight, which lead from Cheongju Airport to Jeju International Airport, took place on 31 August, 2005. With the delivery of another two ATR-72s, the airline launched services between Jeju and Gimpo.
On 19 December 2005, merely four months after the launch, Hansung Airlines suspended all services due to budgetary constraints. On 15 February 2006, flights could be resumed, but financial difficulties remained, resulting in another shut-down in October 2008, which lasted nearly two years.
The airline was formally re-launched on 8 August 2010, now under the changed name T'way Airlines. The first flight was announced for 15 September, five days after T'way took delivery of its first brand new Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
