I am vert inspired by my interview with Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson and Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter two weeks ago at their Chelsea studio. The feature will appear in TRACE Magazine in the April/May issue dedicated to the theme of PEACE. I can't really reveal much of what we'd talked about, so stay tuned for the extended interview on my TRACE blog. All I can say is that this heart-hitting record is going to make you dig deep into your conscience and will hopefully wake up your inner watchdog. Check out the ill title track with Black Thought, Mos Def and Styles P....

Until the album drops, check their dope new video, directed by Ric Cordero...this track is pure HEAT!

NY'S FINEST: Pete Rock drops new album

The Roots are going to release their highly- anticipated record Rising Down in April, Q-Tip’s next solo album The Renaissance is set to drop in June, while Talib Kweli has just released a free (!) new mixtape entitled MCEO (click here to download). The album that I’ve been waiting for since last year when I first heard about it from the man himself, --- undoubtedly the freshest produce of February--- is Pete Rock’s new album, entitled NY's Finest.
One of my favorite producers of all time, the legendary Soul Brother # 1 is known for his completely unique, immediately recognizable sound that was largely responsible for shaping NYC hip-hop in the 90’s. His legacy is enormous; ask any of today’s dope producers like Kanye West, Pharrel, Just Blaze, or Timbaland, and they will all tell you about the extent their indebted to the man for inspiration.
So four years after his last album Soul Survivor II, we can finally get to taste the fruit of Pete Rock's undying labor, a joint venture between Soul Survivor Records and NYC-based indie label Nature Sounds. The record features an intimidating line-up of hip-hop Wu Tang’s Raekwon and Masta Killa, Redman, D-Block, Dipset’s Jim Jones, Max B, Styles P, and Sheek Louch, among others. Satisfaction guaranteed.
For a limited time, if you purchase NY's Finest at any FYE stores, you can get a FREE bonus DVD featuring Kanye West, Pharrell, Timberland, DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, ?uestlove and more. Don Brodie's lovely photos provided the eyecandy. MC Eagle Nebula and her partner Tius Blak rocked the crowd with their real-to-the-bone rhyming skills, while Nicholas Ryan Gant brought a sexy R&B vibe to the night. My friends, Sarah White and DJ Don Cuco, blew away everyone with their incredible hard-to-box, future-soul heartstopper. Sarah's sultry, layered vocals were beautifully complemented by Don Cuco's soulful soundscapes. These guys are unstoppable! Make sure to check back for my upcoming interview with her.

Undoubtedly, the debate probably provided a healthy dose of blood-transfusion needed to revive what kept hip-hop fresh and authentic.

To remind us why we love the '80s so much, legendary music photographer Janette Beckman shares some of the best moments of her carrier in her book The Breaks: Stylin’ and Profilin’ 1982–1990 (published by powerHouse, with texts by Bill Adler and Tom Terrell).
