Alright…its been awhile since I have written. I have been up to all sorts of things: I had the most outrageous trip over last weekend and so I have been taking it easy and resting up. Danny and I made the trek to the Wolf Creek Sanctuary and it was certainly a trip down the rabbit hole, which I did need VERY badly. I got to see two dear friends of mine who had all sorts of exciting news and positive vibes and I met lots of wonderful wonderland creatures ( Radical Faeries to be exact), enjoyed the lush land and drummed my heart out at night by the fire. Needless to say I am quite inspired by it all. More exciting things: Tonight Danny and I will be at the Last Thursday Art walk on Alberta St in Portland OR. It was taken during my first time vending at the Long Beach art walk in 08. This painting was commissioned by a dear dear friend and in exchange he gave me my first tattoo. I may be holding onto this painting for him because he is fleeing the city life to live for some time in an RV on some lush land in Oregon....so i will be able to take some nice high quality pictures of the finished piece when i get it back! Its going to be so great having him only a few hours away vs all the way in another state! i cant wait for all these things to come into play...it seems since winter has melted away there has been a burst of new happenings/changes/opportunity and it is indeed a breath of fresh air. ....and look, me before dread locks! As far as everything else goes, I am ok and still hanging in there. Spring is in full bloom and its lovely and look, my wildflower seeds and begun to bloom: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/3470113972/" title="Sprouts and the Gnome by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Sprouts and the Gnome" height="335" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3574/3470113972_143160d761.jpg" width="500" /></a> I bought some wildflower seeds from the 99 cent store...they are startin to push up now! in the bigger pot i planted some bulbs and they are just beginning to break the surface. truthfully i dont know what to expect from these little guys so i guess its going to be a surprise when they grow tall enough to bloom. and meet my faithful patio Gnome...he has done a great job with overseeing the various patio activities/festivities be it keeping a watchful eye on my sprouts to guarding our territory from curious tomcats looking for mischief! I suppose its hard to blend into a stuffy office building when my hands are multi colored and all my clothes have some amount of paint on them, oh well! I have been pretty good at hiding my hands from the boss man. Whats really funny is going to the market and watching people get really creeped out over the fact that you are touching food they might buy with multi-color hands. when in actuality my hands are probably cleaner then everyone’s since i spend much time, each day scrubbing and soaking and wringing and washing out dyed fabrics. my hands get so chapped! it cant be good to absorb all this dye through my hands though...i just HATE latex gloves... I think there is an interaction between my roots and my music. The more I know about my roots the more it affects my compositions. There are a lot of things I'm still learning about my roots and I need to explore them as much as possible because music is to me a sanctuary which reflects my identity. So while I was into the piano lessons, my brother was at another level playing the bass and got me interested in his influences. So quickly he steered me into other music styles especially jazz-rock (70's) and that was a new beginning for me and simultaneously he made me discover HIP-HOP and all the representative forms which are part of the culture. I became a dancer and practiced all the moves my brother showed me whether it was in smurf, breakdancing, poppin or freestlyle.. it was huge to me.. Dance still has a serious role in my music because I think each of the tones is a step or a move to me..I mean this is the way I always felt and still feel. So making music to me is almost like dancing and when I do a beat I always apply a move to it! Like Charlie Parker used to say 'What we did not live, we cannot play it' L: What & who were your main influences in your musical evolution? I think my influences are still quite the same not that I'm square or stuck with them but they still influence me today. So in no particular order I would say : Africa, my family, nature, life, dreams and nightmares, places, people, arts, sports, books, movies.. Like many other music genres (jazz, blues, funk, soul) that originated in the African-American life experience, hip-hop has become a universal language able to express a certain type of life experience outside of the US as well. Why do you think it appeals to so many people around the world? What is the main power of hip-hop for you? Hip-hop appeals to people because it's about You and your life and life is real and so as HIP-HOP. This movement has been able to evolve in different art disciplines such as djing, graffiti, b-boying-b-girlng, MCing. There's not a lot of movement that I know of that can pretend to have that many crossroads, so I think that is why HIP-HOP has built up a lot of interest as well worldwide. Concerning its popularity I think the underground radios really contributed to its expansion. If I recall on my experience because they were supporting the cause, so it became worldwide quickly but the official medias were trying to play it like it was some corny fashion movement that they tried to suppress or suffocate (as you wish !o!) but it was stronger than them. And the fact that you didn't have to pay for anything if you wanted to be part of this, was already a sign of unity, it's just about YOU and your skills, even the skills to be around, I mean there are some people who never really expressed themselves through the different disciplines but were like into it and still part of it..so it's a wide range of individuals who feel part of this movement. I see it growing with its inner crisis but still holding to its roots searching to innovate in different spheres. Your new album, ART/ MONEY (harmony) is associated with exhibitions and is a multidisciplinary project involving many painters and a poet, right? Could you tell me more about the album? Yes it is..to make it short and clear I wanted to be able to work with my bests friends from Brooklyn, painters JEROME LAGARRIGUE & TIM OKAMURA who used to be graf-writers way back and TROY GILBERT who is a poet from Washington DC. It was an idea and now it's becoming real and we're still working on putting together the exhibition & show so that it will see the light in proper conditions soon. While it is similar in fold style, dye colors the shirts are certainly individual, being similar in nature but completely different. This is one of the many reasons i love tie-dye. tie dye is very unpredictable and while we can only hope to mimic similar dye/tie folds the dye has a mind of its own. Every tie-dye is a surprise no matter how concisely planned and in a sense that’s where the magic lies! On to other news: I can hardly wait for this weekend to arrive! Danny and I will be visiting the "wolf creek" sanctuary/commune for a few days, located in the southern tip of Oregon. Two of our close friends from LA are driving up in their RV and we will be camping together on the land there. I can only imagine how refreshing this excursion will be: providing us with a chance to embrace this beautiful spring bloom and get out of our mundane habits and routine! I love the challenge of inhabiting someone elses' visionary world with my characters in a way that is still recognizably my work, yet still working with the other's vision harmoniously. I've been working hard and don't have much time to hang these days, so getting together and painting allows me to catch up with them and share on a deeper level. Each piece has its own existence and sometimes we paint a story we already figured out, sometimes we paint the future. Doing art with other artists who are willing to share is one of the most rewarding experience for me. More on the way! </div>

Most of these folks are artists themselves--painters, fashion designers, musicians, film makers, writers, designers, educators, djs, producers, or activists and the freshest looking cats around...This is the core of my Brooklyn fam: some of New York City's finest renaissance visionaries I feel blessed to be around them, have their support and love and to be able to circulate inspiration and my creative energy with them.
