UPCOMING SHOW: painting a mural with Jaque Fragua & Chris Stain at the STREET TEXT Exhibit at Albuquerque, NEW MEXICO

I'm super psyched about this project that takes me to Albuquerque, NEW MEXICO. I was invited by fellow painter, Pueblo artist <b>Jaque Fragua</b> (scroll down for video) to participate in a collaborative mural project with him and Chris Stain as part for this week-long street art festival in the city. Earlier I had <a href="http://lichiban.blogspot.com/2010/04/mapping-green-future.html">posted a video</a> about him; beside being a working artist, Jaque is also an outspoken social and environmental activist with whom I've been building with for over a year-I'm really honored to be part of this. The upstairs portion of the exhibition titled </span><em><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Art From the Coasts</span></em><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> is curated by Andrew Connors, Curator of Art at The Albuquerque Museum. He compares masters of graffiti art from New York and Los Angeles, including the work of Chaz Bojórquez, Gajin Fujita, John Lorne and Lady Pink, as well as the documentary photography of Henry Chalfant. The downstairs portion of the exhibition titled</span><em><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">The Populist Phenomenon</span></em><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"> is curated by Francesca Searer of 516 ARTS. It includes a mix of local, national and international artists, and examines the artists’ work as a means of expressing a message to the masses. Featured New Mexican artists include Ernest Doty, Jaque Fragua, Stevan Gutierrez, Thomas Christopher Haag and Albert Rosales; and guest artists include Shepard Fairey, Gaia, Mark Jenkins, Alexandre Orion, Chris Stain, Slinkachu, SWOON and Chip Thomas. Work includes on and off-site installations, photographic documentation, portable representations of wheat-paste, stencil and canvas work methods and video clips and films of street artists in action. VONY x REA present :: 'Kids Dream In Color' Spring Workshop x Lichiban

The organization I've been involved with as a teaching artist/ art mentor<a href="http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1716028565"> Voices of New York</a> (VONY) recently teamed up with a New York-based architectural design firm <a href="http://www.realestatearts.com/">Real Estate Arts</a> (REA) to hold a week long art workshop called Kids Dream In Color (KDIC). Ten super talented kids were chosen to participate in a one of a kind art immersion where they had to recreate the Empire State Building using common, eco-friendly art materials. The challenge was to re-envision the building in the year 2400 as a green, earth-friendly building, a futuristic symbol of a new Empire State of Mind.<br /><div style="text-align: left;"><img src="http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q202/licsi777/VONY-REA/VONY_REA_lichiban-3-title2.jpg" /><br /><img src="http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q202/licsi777/VONY-REA/VONY_REA_lichibanblog2-.jpg" /><br />We used a 10-minute visualization exercise using my work, <a href="http://lichiban.blogspot.com/2010/03/new-work-dorje-teacher-of-mountains.html">DORJE </a>to time & space travel to the galaxy where DORJE would serve as an imaginary guide to introduce the kids to alternative ways of imagining a green future. I loved every minute of it: I was really impressed with all the kids' creativity & they were connecting with my cats, which gave me a lot of inspiration to push forward with the vision. Can something other than your 'recycled' trackjackets and vintage outfits you pick up at your local thriftstore be fresh<span style="font-style: italic;"> and</span> eco-friendly? The answer is yes, <span style="font-weight: bold;">junkprints</span> got it all (well at least for the ladies).<br /><br />I recently met <a href="http://www.junkprints.com/about.htm">Chanel</a> Kennebrew, the beautiful designer/visionary behind junkprints at YOUNITY's outdoor arts market. A graphic designer/art director by trade, she designs and manufactures a wide range of recycled/ repurposed goodies from bags to dresses & hoodies.
