Looking back, my original plan to share conversations with my artists colleagues about their work has grown into somewhat of a full-time project and led me to meet some of the dopest artists out there, and I felt it was time to celebrate some of the greatest encounters during this journey.

The original inspiration for this mix was a drawing entitled "Love Takes You Higher" I did to illustrate my developing kat mythology. The image representing the divine couple of my mystical feline beach resort, KATAPULKO, was modeled after Samantabhadra, known amongst some Tibetan Buddhists as the 'primordial Buddha' and his consort and female counterpart, Samantabhadri, the female Buddha. They are united by an unbreakable bond of love through all eternity, and their cosmic lovemaking ensures that the habitants of my feline planet Citraka live in harmonious balance. Vol. 1 represents the male side, soon to be followed by a mix representing the feminine counterpart.

Featured on this mix is a collection of thirty tracks I felt would best go along with the theme of the piece and that I've collected over a year from artists featured on the site ranging from music fam, Cris Prolific, ComputerJay, Dam Funk, J1, Kesed, MeLo-X, Jesse Boykins III, Bilal, Dolphin, Walter Mecca, AFTA-1, Waajeed, Jneiro Jarel, Prince Quan Luv, Old Money Massive, Chief Encore, Chico Mann, Fresh Daily, RVRSplay, Peter Hadar, Johnny Voltik and J-Tronius to some favorites, such as AD Bourke, Hawthorne Headhunters, Onra, Little Dragon, Harmonic313, Space Invadas, Flying Lotus, Ruckazoid, Jimmy Edgar, Machinedrum, Alex Moulton, Gosub, and B Bravo.

To launch the mix series, I asked my good friend, producer/MC/DJ & renaissance man, MeLo-X to make sense of the thirty tracks. Today, while celebrating Martin Luther King's birthday and legacy, is perhaps the best time to share my (re)discovery of Thich Nhat Hanh, a living boddhisattva. A Vietnamese monk, poet, scholar, and peace activist, Thich Nath Hahn has been known for his life long efforts to generate world peace and reconciliation founded on the Buddhist teachings of interconnectedness of all beings. His approach has been to combine a variety of traditional & Zen teachings with methods from Theravada Buddhism and insights from Mahayana Buddhism. In the 60s, he traveled to the U.S. and was giving lectures, urging the U.S. government to withdraw from Vietnam. He had meetings with Martin Luther King, Jr., inspiring him to publicly oppose the Vietnam War; King nominated Hanh for the Nobel Peace Prize in January 1967.

In a recent trip to San Francisco, in the guest room I was staying in, I found a book entitled The Sun My Heart which turned out to be written by Thich Nath Hahn. As a seeker, I believe that when one fully accepts one's life mission, the universe will open up doors to guide one's search (and challenges as well). This book was one of those life's gifts.

THE LETTER OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR TO NOMINATE THICH NATH HAN FOR THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

1967 25, January

The Nobel Institute

Drammesnsveien 19

Oslo, NORWAY

Gentlemen:

As the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate of 1964, I now have the pleasure of proposing to you the name of Thich Nhat Hanh for that award in 1967. I do not personally know of anyone more worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize than this gentle Buddhist monk from Vietnam.

This would be a notably auspicious year for you to bestow your Prize on the Venerable Nhat Hanh. Here is an apostle of peace and non-violence, cruelly separated from his own people while they are oppressed by a vicious war which has grown to threaten the sanity and security of the entire world.

Because no honor is more respected than the Nobel Peace Prize, conferring the Prize on Nhat Hanh would itself be a most generous act of peace. It would remind all nations that men of good will stand ready to lead warring elements out of an abyss of hatred and destruction. It would re-awaken men to the teaching of beauty and love found in peace. It would help to revive hopes for a new order of justice and harmony.

I know Thich Nhat Hanh, and am privileged to call him my friend. Let me share with you some things I know about him. You will find in this single human being an awesome range of abilities and interests.

He is a holy man, for he is humble and devout. He is a scholar of immense intellectual capacity. The author of ten published volumes, he is also a poet of superb clarity and human compassion. His academic discipline is the Philosophy of Religion, of which he is Professor at Van Hanh, the Buddhist University he helped found in Saigon. He directs the Institute for Social Studies at this University. This amazing man also is editor of Thien My, an influential Buddhist weekly publication. And he is Director of Youth for Social Service, a Vietnamese institution which trains young people for the peaceable rehabilitation of their country.

Thich Nhat Hanh today is virtually homeless and stateless. If he were to return to Vietnam, which he passionately wishes to do, his life would be in great peril. He is the victim of a particularly brutal exile because he proposes to carry his advocacy of peace to his own people. What a tragic commentary this is on the existing situation in Vietnam and those who perpetuate it.

The history of Vietnam is filled with chapters of exploitation by outside powers and corrupted men of wealth, until even now the Vietnamese are harshly ruled, ill-fed, poorly housed, and burdened by all the hardships and terrors of modern warfare.

Thich Nhat Hanh offers a way out of this nightmare, a solution acceptable to rational leaders. iRECOMMEND: RELENTLESS a film by Andy Amadi Okoroafor

I can't wait to see RELENTLESS, the debut film of my friend, Andy Amadi Okoroafor. Art director, visionary, nomad, founder/ owner of my favorite creative arts & fashion magazine, CLAM, Andy has been working for the last couple of years on this project that showcases his skill as a director and visual story teller. Shot in two different countries, Freetown Sierra Leone and Lagos Nigeria, the movie is not only visually beautiful but it also boasts an amazing soundtrack that will most likely become as iconic as the score for "Shaft or "The Harder They Come". A mixture of contemporary Nigerian music, 60's highlife tunes and popular African tunes, the films feature tracks from the Nubians, Keziah Jones, Patrice, Ayo, Femi Kuti, and internationally known artists like Manu Chao, Sade, Seal, among others. Also featuring in her debut film role another favorite, Nigerian-German singer NNEKA. As far as the story goes, Andy's own words describe it best:
"I see Relentless as a story told through innovative contemporary images. It is not a voyeuristic eye, it is participative and engaged, it is an insider perspective and the form of the images is a vital element of the film. I want the film to look under the surface, to look at Africa with a new intensity.

Relentless is a love story, a story about war, loneliness, and the workings of the human soul. It is a simple story of ordinary people finding themselves in extra ordinary situations, acting out their destiny. It is not a political story but it is about the effects of war and thus the backdrop is a component to the film, but not the hero.

Though set in Freetown Sierra Leone and Lagos Nigeria, the story could easily have been anywhere in Africa; Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Congo, Rwanda; It is an African story, but also a universal tale. An African story in its landscape and particular circumstances, but a universal story in its characters, its heart and theme.

Relentless deals with the consequence of wars on the psyche of the contemporary African. From Rwanda (genocide), the Congo (the African world war), Burundi (ethnic struggle for power) to Cote d'Ivoire and Darfur. Wars with different ramifications, and brutality, Liberia and later Sierra Leone was at the vanguard of these brutal conflicts of which the biafran war into which our hero Obi was born is one the first in a long list of conflicts that has distorted Africa.

The film has the ambition of exploring Africa beyond the news headlines, sound bites and statistics. It is about looking at Africa from a contemporary point of view. It's about the little people; the ones nobody reports after the satellite transmission dishes have been folded and moved to another cliché. I want Relentless to also be a mirror for African society to look at itself, criticise itself, and celebrate itself.

I am making this film so that Africans would love it and be challenged by it. The world hopefully would follow. I want anybody in the world to identify with the characters and emotions in the film. Africans are believers and we somehow believe a hero will come and save us, he's not shown up and the present African generation is still looking for the new Nkrumah’s, Mandela’s, people with vision and clarity of thought. Hard to produce in refugee camps, running under fire in a world of kid soldiers.

Relentless, is a celebration of Africa, the music, the sensuality, the joy, the jokes and the laughter, the energy, the sheltering sky and the hope that the good men will prevail. It is also a film about Lagos, the biggest African city and how ordinary people navigate this challenging untamed urban jungle. From the security guard to the prostitute, from the big time politician hoping to pull the strings of power, to the okada driver hoping to make it big.

Finally, it is an acknowledgement of the possibilities that lie in the modern African experience; it is to shine the world's light on us, if not for our ingenuity, at least the acknowledgement of our will to survive.
I am hoping to tell that African story through film, like Fela did with his Afro beat music and Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka did through literature and touched the world." ...to read more visit clamfilms.com

RELENTLESS will be featured at the 54th BFI London Film Festival on October 13-18, 2010. Stay tuned for US show dates
