Opening on Saturday, September 10, from 2pm – 5pm at the Yonkers Riverfront Public Library, during the annual Yonkers Riverfest event, the project utilizes urban art as a platform for visual discourse on sustainable agriculture, food systems, food justice, and mother earth, and closes on Sunday, December 4th, 2011. Additional programming in the City of Yonkers and at Sarah Lawrence College will take place throughout fall 2011, including youth workshops and a panel discussion.

All of the artists in the exhibition, Lichiban, Swoon, Sofia Maldonado, Krista Franklin, Marthalicia, Diana McClure, Faith 47, lmnop, Lady Alezia, and Alice Mizrachi, engage with the theme mother earth or nature, and related concepts, both directly and indirectly in their individual artistic practices. In the context of this exhibition the artists were asked to utilize the idea of the hood as a metaphor for not only local neighborhoods and urban culture, but also land, nature and the natural environment at large. And, finally, the genesis and inspiration for the exhibition stems from the curators’ discovery of La Via Campesina (The International Peasant Movement) and an intense global movement for land and agricultural rights taking place below the radar.

In the YOUNITY tradition, GODDESShood: Our land is our jewel will include painting, murals, photography, and stencils, as well as video and sculptural objects. The exhibition picks up where YOUNITY’s last exhibition FRESHER!, which addressed consumerism, environmentalism, health, and renewable energy, left off in the fall of 2009. Co-curator Diana McClure says, “With the GODDESShood: Our land is our jewel exhibition we wanted to use the YOUNITY platform as a tool for social change and disseminator of information by bringing visibility to a battle being fought by peasants, small and medium-size farmers, landless people, women farmers, indigenous people, migrants and agricultural workers from around the world. A battle that seems to get lost in mainstream media’s disregard for the economic politics of green living.” With the success of YOUNITY’s premiere exhibit in 2007, The C R O S S O V E R, the second annual Heart and Soul show and book publication in 2008, and FRESHER! in 2009, YOUNITY has become one of the most sought after all-female collectives to date. Co-curator and YOUNITY co-founder Alice Mizrachi says, “After 3 years of annual exhibitions, wall productions, youth workshops, etc. The core YOUNITY production team decided to take a year off in 2010 to explore new ideas and individual creative pursuits. During that time we’ve all developed and hope to use our growing cultural capital to continue to support female urban artists and address social issues as individuals and a collective.”

For more information on public programming in conjunction with the GODDESShood: Our land is our jewel exhibition, including youth workshops led by Co-Curator/Arts Educator Alice Mizrachi for Yonkers youth, and a panel discussion moderated by Co-Curator Diana McClure at Sarah Lawrence College, visit www.theyounity.com.

A summertime soundtrack for lovers for getaways in all dimensions.

Big shout out to all the homies who have contributed to this mix and to MeLo for getting down on this. Chris has been compared to Nat King Cole, Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder, and I would add Marvin Gaye to the list...but this is only to say that he is an amazingly talented singer who continues the tradition of some of the greatest American soul singers. The single was produced by The Stuyvesants and was written and arranged by Chris himself and the homie, Melo-X. No boxes, just plain good sexy music!

Chris was formally trained at the New School University for Jazz and Contemporary Music and has studied from teachers like Reggie Workman, Charlie Persip, and Richard Harper. Additionally, Chris studied with Bilal Oliver who taught him to free his mind, challenging Chris to use his musicianship to think outside the box. He has sung background for Sean Kingston, the Jamaican-American reggae/pop music singer and rapper, and has toured with Gwen Stefani, Kelly Clarkson, Chris Brown, Bow Wow, Soulja Boy, and many others.

This is what he himself has to say about his work: "My main goal in music is to stretch the boundaries in music so a pop crowd or a hip-hop crowd can still blast a "soul" track and consider it to be pop or hip-hop..to me music is music...there's good music and then there's not so good music...there's music with soul and music that wants to be soulful...lol, I'm all about making real...from the gut soul..that can universally bridge the Rhythm and Blues of the 70's with the hip hop and soul of today."
FREE DOWNLOAD
if you'd like to support the artist, please go to his bandcamp page and purchase the track.
CHRIS TURNER 'Liquid Love' (prod by Stuyvesants) by lichibanblossom

website // twitter

So I'm specially excited to introduce it as one of our brand new music/visual collabo projects. I've been doing some visuals for JV for a while and this latest one is a part of a series from a collective project called LUX27 that photographer WEZN (light painting photography) and myself (art direction, graphic design) had founded.

So back to the song, 'DO YOU' is like a psychedelic space trip riding the cosmic love frequencies to the final destination..an ascending and explosive aural journey...use your imagination.

<noembed>'DO YOU' by Johnny Voltik</noembed>

Here are some instructions for listening from JV himself,
"This song is an experiment…follow the directions below while listening to the album version. When your mind is relaxed and clear, focus on your midsection. Feel the life force inside you getting more and more present.
3. Begin to feel the feeling of having that person or thing in your life. Really act as if they or it is with you. iheART NYC: live painting at the LEVI'S Curve ID event featuring Janelle Monae

Bryant Park, New York City

I was booked to live paint at the LEVI'S Curve ID promo event w/my artist homies Marka 27 &Ron Upperman (one half of Leroy Jenkins). The live art was part of the massive giveaway LEVI'S had organized to promote their new Curve ID jeans (1000 pairs were promised to be given out for free). The event was a big success, the line was already wrapping around the Bryant Park when I got there at 9:30am. Beside free food, t-shirts and the jeans, people could pick up some art work for free as well. Well, I literally turned into a McLichiban, cranking out 40 pieces of quick stencil and brush work...as you can see, some of these pieces were a hit & miss. This was super fun though, I loved giving away the work to my beautiful sisters.

hehe...that was the 1 min playtime...the rest was all work, non-stop. We worked from 10 am till 8:30pm when we still had customers lined-up waiting for art work!

The treat of the day was Janelle Monae's sweeping performance. This is why I go to see live shows...her performance was dynamite, full of fire & energy and seeing an artist being that free makes you feel free too...She can turn a crowd out with her energy, while singing about real issues most artists at her level don't really touch. One of the most amazing artists of today, hands down. For the month of September, Amazon is offering her new album " The ArchAndroid" for $5!!. INTERVIEW :: "THE FUTURE SOUND OF PARIS" :: ONRA x LICHIBAN interview

ONRA had a smoking 80's boogie mix up (link below) on the site, so I kept him on my radar afterwards. Hailing from Paris, ONRA is a true music nomad whose mixed background and eclectic taste in music made him stand out the first time I came upon his work, such as the 2007 release Chinoiseries, on which he used only Chinese and Vietnamese samples or Tribute, his collabo album with Quetzal from the same year, which showcased his skills as a hip-hop producer. His new album LONG DISTANCE set to drop this month, is a journey through more Dilla and 90s hip-hop -inspired beats, but it has a heavy 80s boogie-funk feel, more in the vein of Dâm-Funk's sweeping modern funk movement. The album will be featuring guest appearances from Reggie B, Buddy Sativa, T3 from Slum Village, Olivier Daysoul, Walter Mecca and promises to be one of the hottest albums coming out of the France this year. Support real music by buying the release! As promised, here is my interview with him (Check his album teaser here). When I sent him the questions, I put on my wishlist an ONRA x Waajeed collabo, only to find out that there is already one in the making! Keep your eyes out for the upcoming single featuring the song he produced with T3 of Slum Village and remixes by Waajeed, among others.

Lichiban: I read that your roots go back to Vietnam. How does your motherland filters into your work?

ONRA : My father was born in Viet Nam, but moved to France at the age of 3, so, he didn't even know how to speak Vietnamese for most of his life. He's just learning now. The Vietnamese culture hasn't been much of an influence on me. I was born in Germany, my mother's French and I lived all my life between France and Ivory Coast in West Africa. So all those places have had an influence on me, more than Viet Nam. I can say that Hip-Hop culture has played a much more important role in defining who I am today, than my Vietnamese roots.

L: Your new album 'Long Distance' gives me a sense of 'freedom & smell of summer & feeling really good under the sun'-kind of vibes. A lot of music that about to come out that I've been hearing from friends have a solar vibration (mostly unreleased yet). Is that something you identify with? Do you see that in the music scene you are connected with?

O: Yeah totally... this album is very summer-friendly, there's a lot of sun inside, it's feel-good music. I want people to have some great memories to it. It has been inspired by my recent trips, it really has the feeling of "traveling".

L: The secret ingredient...
O: I don't have any.

L: What's your arsenal? Favorite instrument?
O: I make everything with the Akai MPC 1000. Favorite instrument.... hmmm... Fender Rhodes maybe... or drums...

L: Favorite superhero / super star? Explain...

O: I'm not into superheroes... and super star? I'm not sure of what it means really. So I'm gonna give you my favorite NBA player, Reggie Miller! All-time leader from Long Distance!

L: Inspirations?
O: I come from a 90's Hip-Hop, R'n'B, New Jack background. But those music opened my ears to other kind of music. Little by little, I discovered Soul, then Funk, Jazz, Jazz/funk, Soul/jazz, Progressive Rock, Brazilian Music, Afrobeat, Electronic, Experimenal, Early Electronics, New Wave, etc etc... and the list got endless now. That's why my albums won't sound the same, cause I'm inspired by too many different things.

L: Artists tend to get sometimes lost in birthing too many project ideas but not finishing them...How do you keep your focus?
O: I go with the flow, everything is clear in my mind, I know what has to come out first. I have two/three projects almost ready... Just needed to drop this one first.

L: Next project...
O: Next project is a Roots/Dub EP I have with Quetzal (Al Quetz), the other french producer I made the first album with. It's gonna be heavy. And then, Chinoiseries Part 2, maybe :)

L: Could you put me on three of your favorite albums of 2009?
O: Kan Kick, Dam-Funk, Machinedrum.

L: Could you define success?
O: There's several ways to see it. I guess the ultimate success is reached when you're 100% satisfied with your music, people love it as much as you do and you have the respect from artists that inspired you. I guess that's pretty hard to achieve. I think every artist has his own meaning for success. "Success", in our world's meaning, would be bigger labels with bigger budgets, more tours, more shows, radio plays, video, etc... Something more material.
Because I never thought this would happen like this, I feel really fortunate. Just by having listeners all around the world, having toured in several countries, making music my everyday activity, etc... My own success would simply be to keep on this way and get better.

L: Shoutouts?
O: Check out my man Buddy Sativa's music, he's super talented, he's gonna come out with a jazz project on Favorite Recordings later this year. He is SERIOUS...and also check out Walter Mecca, a young and super talented artist from Paris. FREE DOWNLOAD :: JNEIRO JAREL remix :: Massive Attack - Atlas Air - (Lavender Jungle Remix )

One of my favorite MC/producers & friend, JNEIRO JAREL just sent me his new remix of Massive Attack's Atlas Air, one of the new tracks off of the band's highly-anticipated new album 'Heligoland'. Jneiro is known for his eclectic production style ranging from hip hop, electronica, Brazilian funk, to bass music and has been making music under various aliases such as Dr. Who Dat? and his group Shape of Broad Minds. Most recently, he has worked on projects with Khujo Goodie (as Willie Isz), MF Doom (he is also his tour DJ), and TV on the Radio, among others (read more about his musical arsenal here). He is a trendsetter, many of his projects I heard were clearly way ahead of their time; definitely dig in and explore his work. Stay tuned for an interview with him and some freebies coming up soon.

find him on facebook // twitter // website

This is gold right here!

<noembed>Atlas Air - (Lavender Jungle Remix by Jneiro Jarel ) by Jneiro Jarel</noembed>

His new EP "Android Love Mayhem" drops 4/13/2010!
