Dope archival footage and live interviews made this amazing story come alive and show a side of NY that people who lived that era talk about with a mix of pride and painful memories. A beautiful work in oral history about a major social and cultural force that eventually gave birth to hip-hop and its global cultural impact. Street art and so much of music today wouldn't exist without the struggles and creative force of these guys back in the 60s & 70s. I highly recommend it. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><i>From 1968 to 1975, gangs ruled New York City. Beyond the idealistic hopes of the civil rights movement lay a unfocused rage. Neither law enforcement nor social agency could end the escalating bloodshed. VONY presents :: KIDS DREAM IN COLOR [Support us by signing up!]

VONY is an organization I've been involved with as a teaching artist at the Visual Arts program. We had teamed up a few months ago with a New York-based architectural design firm <a href="http://www.realestatearts.com/" style="color: #13cf8f; text-decoration: none;">Real Estate Arts</a> (REA) to hold a week long art workshop called Kids Dream In Color (KDIC). Ten super talented kids were chosen to participate in a week-long workshop at the firm to recreate the Empire State Building using common, eco-friendly art materials and re-envision the building in the year 2020 as a green, earth-friendly building, a futuristic symbol of a new Empire State of Mind. We had kids who knew how to do stop-motion animation or had their own comic books drawn. At the end of the program, we had an exhibit where they could showcase and demonstrate their work. I incorporated my piece DORJE as an imaginary guide to the Galaxy of Kats, which the kids visited in their imagination to collect wisdom about how to preserve energy on Earth using natural resources during their visualization exercise. Art director, visionary, nomad, founder/ owner of my favorite creative arts & fashion magazine, CLAM, Andy has been working for the last couple of years on this project that showcases his skill as a director and visual story teller. Shot in two different countries, Freetown Sierra Leone and Lagos Nigeria, the movie is not only visually beautiful but it also boasts an amazing soundtrack that will most likely become as iconic as the score for "Shaft or "The Harder They Come". A mixture of contemporary Nigerian music, 60's highlife tunes and popular African tunes, the films feature tracks from the Nubians, Keziah Jones, Patrice, Ayo, Femi Kuti, and internationally known artists like Manu Chao, Sade, Seal, among others. Also featuring in her debut film role another favorite, Nigerian-German singer <a href="http://nnekaworld.com/">NNEKA</a>. As far as the story goes, Andy's own words describe it best: <br />"<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">I see Relentless as a story told through innovative contemporary images. It is not a voyeuristic eye, it is participative and engaged, it is an insider perspective and the form of the images is a vital element of the film. I want the film to look under the surface, to look at Africa with a new intensity.<br /><br />Relentless is a love story, a story about war, loneliness, and the workings of the human soul. It is a simple story of ordinary people finding themselves in extra ordinary situations, acting out their destiny. It is not a political story but it is about the effects of war and thus the backdrop is a component to the film, but not the hero.<br /><br />Though set in Freetown Sierra Leone and Lagos Nigeria, the story could easily have been anywhere in Africa; Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Congo, Rwanda; It is an African story, but also a universal tale. An African story in its landscape and particular circumstances, but a universal story in its characters, its heart and theme.<br /><br />Relentless deals with the consequence of wars on the psyche of the contemporary African. Wars with different ramifications, and brutality, Liberia and later Sierra Leone was at the vanguard of these brutal conflicts of which the biafran war into which our hero Obi was born is one the first in a long list of conflicts that has distorted Africa.<br /><br />The film has the ambition of exploring Africa beyond the news headlines, sound bites and statistics. It is about looking at Africa from a contemporary point of view. It's about the little people; the ones nobody reports after the satellite transmission dishes have been folded and moved to another cliché. I want Relentless to also be a mirror for African society to look at itself, criticise itself, and celebrate itself.<br /><br />I am making this film so that Africans would love it and be challenged by it. The world hopefully would follow. I want anybody in the world to identify with the characters and emotions in the film. Africans are believers and we somehow believe a hero will come and save us, he's not shown up and the present African generation is still looking for the new Nkrumah’s, Mandela’s, people with vision and clarity of thought. Hard to produce in refugee camps, running under fire in a world of kid soldiers.<br /><br />Relentless, is a celebration of Africa, the music, the sensuality, the joy, the jokes and the laughter, the energy, the sheltering sky and the hope that the good men will prevail. Fabian is a true visionary and one of my favorite peoples..his creativity never ceases to amaze and inspire me. Though very impressive, his arsenal of trophies reflect only a fraction of his talents. (He was the Emmy 2008 winner, (Outstanding Main Title Design for <a href="http://www.imaginaryforces.com/archive/alphabetical/386">Mad Men Title Sequence</a>) and American Graphic Design Awards Broadcast Design Winner 2003 (Comedy Central’s “COMIC REMIX” just to name a couple.) I remembered this Tuvan throatsinging punk band I used to listen to years ago, called <a href="http://www.yat-kha.com/html/who/who.php">Yat Kha</a>. So I youtubed it and found this amazing animation made for their joint I've never heard before. It is based on the Turkic legend of Mankurt, a story def worth looking up. It's a symbolic tale about actual and mental slavery through the story of Mankurt whose memory is erased and turned into a zombie...as you see the character here finds himself in the city later self-destructing. It's also a metaphor about what happens if you forget your love, roots, ancestors, your mother Earth, and get enslaved by your own forgetfulness...<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">Yast Kha's birthplace, Tuva has gotten recent attention through it's music. The Soviets cut off Tuva from the outside world for over 50 years, it is one of the most hidden and mysterious places of the southern regions of Siberia in Central Asia. Tuva maintained to a large degree its nomadic heritage and shamanistic culture, though Tuvan shaman were persecuted under Stalin. Their religion is similar to many Northern American Native tribes and their musical culture is tied in with their shamanistic healing tradition. He went to Tuva and entered the contest! <a href="http://www.genghisblues.com/">GENGHIS BLUES</a>, the documentary following Paul Pena's journey to Tuva is one of my favorite films. I highly recommend it.
