Hello All,

I just released 3 more of my 1st edition 4"x 6" art prints for sale on etsy from the Goddess In All of Us body art series. So there is more to come!

Over the weekend i made a few pieces of artwork for donation to In Other Words Feminist book store.
They are having an art auction to raise funds to keep the store open.
Here are just a couple of the pieces i am entering into the art auction:

Green Harpy
4.5" x 8" ink drawing on acrylic painted wood
by Chelsea Rose

Purple Curl
7" x 8" ink drawing on acrylic painted wood
by Chelsea Rose

....In Other Words is a one of kind feminist bookstore and community outreach center here in Portland Oregon. I would hate to see it have to close its doors for lack of funds. If you are interested in learning more about the book store check out the website. If you want to see how you can help keep it up and running check out this page.

In other news, this weekend was a nice one spent relaxing at home watching Samurai 7 (the old black and white movie and then the new anime version also.) We did some watercolor painting, took a nice hike in the local woods, baked some home made samosas, went out to lunch for Tom Kha soup with our friend Dr Bob, worked on more art projects...you get the idea! Still, the weekend somehow seemed short.

here are a couple scans of the watercolor fun:

3rd Eye Navigation
4" x 6"
original watercolor painting
by Chelsea Rose

Succulent
4" x 6"
original watercolor painting
by Chelsea Rose

I am also working on a short story to submit to a fiction writing blog party a friend of mine does once a month. You are supposed to submit one story 2,000 words or less by emailing her a link to where you posted it so that she can feature the writing on her blog along with the other participants. This is just what i need to keep myself writing. Deadlines actually do help sometimes! I have my story all written out but I am still over the word limit by a couple hundred so i am looking to trim it down. i will be posting it once its all done. Content hint: my story is based in a post apocalyptic society with an accidental hero that remakes the fate of the world through her painting. I hope it isn't a snooze! You ll tell me the truth, wont you?

I am also pretty close to being done with crafting a publishing proposal/cover letter to send off to a few publishing companies that i have in mind. I would love to get my Goddess In All of Us body art photography book picked up by someone like Chronicles books but i cant wait for that to happen, i have to seek them out myself.
In the meantime i have been submitting my Goddess In All of Us series to local art galleries in Portland Oregon. I have gotten back some very encouraging responses however most of the galleries seem to already be booked through all of 2011 and a lot of 2012. Im also going to begin approaching out of state galleries but it does seem that Goddess shows will have to be a thing of the future. Wish me luck!

So thats whats up in my current realm of existence.
Much love and many blessings,
-Chelsea Rose

See the sale listing HERE.

And some snapshots danny took of me working on these:

as you can see i took over the dining room table with my watercolor supplies!

Honestly i had been itching to play with watercolor ever since i sold one of my originals- talk about inspiration and encouragement!

In other news- we must now backtrack to Thursday the 26th which was the Last Thursday Artwalk on Alberta st for August:

This was our booth set up. As always we were selling original art, silkscreen prints, tie dye and more.

I painted my face up in hopes to entice some souls to have their own faces/bodies painted by me for a few bucks:

...and so it did attract quite a few moms and their kids to have their faces painted:

and all was well and super fun until the unthinkable happened....Wells Fargo set up a table to "sign up accounts" right next to us!!! I was truly outraged by this and confronted them about it. I pretty much said that i was very uncomfortable with their presence at what is supposed to be a community based independent artwork festival. I hope i made my disgust known enough for them to think twice about setting up again. This may be a sign that its the beginning of the end for the Alberta arts festivals but i am determined to not be too disheartened. We will see how it goes for September's last Thursday art walk.

...Oh and for those who are wondering why my dreads are suddenly red- i colored it with Henna( all natural plant based hair coloring!)
The process was pretty messy and looked something like this:

but i had fun making the mess as always and the henna was so soothing and healing for my scalp.
The color change was pretty dramatic as you can see- but i love it! Change is good.

Danny has been super busy finsing these huge screens for a Buddha silkscreen/marbling project he has in the works:

As you can see- he is all done with the three screens needed to make up his 3 color Buddha print. Instead of using the photo emulsion method of creating these silkscreens he hand painted them with drawing fluid. The next step is getting all his supplies ready to begin marbling big sheets of paper that he will then print the buddha onto. i cant wait to see the outcome but we have to wait awhile and let the $$ come in so that he can purchase all the supplies.

a quick snap of Danny and I over the weekend. We spent a good amount of time hanging out on the patio, conversing and drinkin tea.
I hope every one's weekend went well.

more updates coming soon.

Best wishes,
-Chelsea Rose

Body Painting Commission Photos and Original Watercolor Paintings for sale!

It proved to be a fairly mellow week with some much better behaved weather that did not leave my brain melted into a puddle between my feet.
On Tuesday Danny and I drove out to Scholl Oregon to meet a photographer and his pregnant model for a body painting commission.
The photographer was hoping for a somewhat "earth mama" vibed body painting since he intended to photograph the maternity shoot amongst Oregon's lush greenery.
While i worked Danny took some photos of the process:

As seen in the above photo i started the body painting by blocking out some color and then going into it to create detail and shape in order to create flowers.

The flowers were inspired by the big "dinner plate Dahlia" flowers.

The lotus was a fun addition with its roots delving into a very mysterious eye. I liked the back piece the best.
With this body painting i was trying to part ways a bit from the body painting style i have been using for my women's study body painting seires. I want to keep that look of mine soly under my name in hopes that my project will remain consistent and easily recognizable.
...Anyhow i am interested to see photos from the photographer and i will share a few with his permission on the blog when he does come out with them.

Just yesterday i decided to list more of my original watercolor paintings for sale in my etsy shop so i now pleased to announce that the following three have made it into the shop and are available for purchase:

Goddess In Full Bloom
9" x 12" watercolor painting on watercolor paper
by Chelsea Rose
Priced at $100
click here for the sale listing.

Evening Gown
9" x 12"
Original watercolor painting on watercolor paper
by Chelsea Rose
Priced at $100
Click here for the sale listing.

and also:

Sweet Water Gem
9" x 12"
original watercolor painting
by Chelsea Rose
Priced at $100
Click here for the sale listing.

....i will be listing 4 more watercolor paintings for sale in the etsy shop very soon!

Otherwise, summer continues to beat its drum and my morning glory flowers are blooming in a fever!

....and this pleases me :)

Danny got our basil clippings to begin rooting in some of my antique bottles:

...so as of yesterday they have been happily potted on the patio.
I love the way the basil smells in the morning and i am greatly anticipating some of danny's home made pesto made from our home grown plant!

And here is a look at a goofy pic i took of myself the other day when i was playing around with my locs:

I enjoyed this style because it reminded me of the hair of my current mermaid painting that i am working on:

see?
:P
I ordered some Henna dye for my dready tendrils just the other day so if the powder arrives today or tomorrow I may end up with "Irish red" locs for Monday. we shall see!
Otherwise, as far as this weekend goes i am pleased to say there are no "big plans." Sold an original watercolor, working on my mermaid + summer patio garden pics

So its august, and my birthday is this Sunday! I am turning 23.
and so far... I started off my birth week with some awesome surprises/presents such as:
I sold an original watercolor painting of mine via our etsy shop the other day!
See it here:

---SOLD---
"Bathing in Babylon"
original watercolor painting by Chelsea Rose

....Yes! she has found a good home and is going to New York, in fact.
It is always such an uplifting and exciting thing to sell original work- very inspiring. My heart goes out to those who support the arts!
I was pretty surprised that this watercolor sold in our etsy shop seeing that i tend to do better selling inexpensive prints on etsy and have been reluctant to put much of my original painting work up. However, this proves there are certainly interested art collectors on etsy willing to pay an artist a fair sum for original art. Perhaps i will be putting more of my watercolor and my acrylic paintings on etsy for sale in the near future!
.....seeing that this watercolor has sold also seems to have made me itch to play with watercolor( its been too long!) so i hope i can manage to play with some this weekend even though its supposed to be retardedly hot.

I got another birthday present in the form of a body painting paid commission. A fellow flickr photographer came to me, asking for my body painting services for his planned maternity shoot which he is doing for his portfolio. I happily agreed and i am excited to see how it all comes together since the theme is very "earth mother."

Here are two super quick sketches i made to show him my floral ideas for the body painting( i wanted them to look very different from my current women's study body painting series.) :
front details
back details.
The photographer said he loved these roughed out ideas- which i will be painting with earth tones of green, brown and reds. The shoot has been set for the 17th. It will be exciting to see how the project comes together. and yes of course i will have Danny with me and he will surely take some photos of the body painting process so i can share in an update entry.

In other news I have been doing some more work on my "work in progress" mermaid acrylic painting:

( sorry for the horrible photo- was taken at night in very low and yellow lighting.)
So far i have added a lot more side fins to help fill up space and add more flow and detail. However the painting was striking me as being horribly flat so i started adding bubbles in hopes of concocting some much needed depth. I am still far from finished. I have everything sort of roughed out and now i have to go back in and fine tune. I intend to add more layers of bubble also. And eventually i will have to paint the hands- which i am sure i will avoid till the very end :P

On a personal note i have come to terms with my addiction to hats. And while i am comforted by the truth that there are certainly worse addictions to be had...its still a shame!
My newest addition to my ever growing collection:

I found this one in downtown Portland at the skidmore fountain market which we cruised before heading over to the artful Saturday Market. It is purple and green/my favorite color harmony and It was $15 and is made of hemp. It works as a less dramatic sun barrier then my other sun hat which Danny has likened to a sombrero.

While this summer has been a relatively mild one- the sun has still been out in force and so my patio garden in flourishing:

the wild flowers were the first to come up and thus are most mature. However my morning glory vines have sprouted and quickly matured. They are now happily climbing the lattice and the iron work of the patio. Its a shame i took this photo in the evening because by then the 6 big morning glory trumpet flowers had gone to rest so they are not pictured here. But in this photo you can see some of my chamomile- which i just recently harvested a few flower heads to dry and make tea from.

The basil isn't seen here but its doing well and has gone through its first clippings-Chile sprouts are is still maturing and our fuscia hanging plant is producing all sorts of blooms and attracting hummingbirds to our windows. However my cilantro went to seed before i could even use it for tacos or something!

our little growing space may be small but i am thankful for it! I love hanging out on the patio on these long summer evenings with Danny and sushi cat. Summer is full with life right now. In fact just the other day Danny went outside and came back in with a huge pot full of freshly picked wild black berries from the big bushes around our neighborhood- they are everywhere and laden with fruit. Yum Yum.
As much as i am enjoying summer I am eagerly awaiting fall which i think is my fave season over here in Portland Oregon. The trees turn such psychedelic shades of orange, yellow and pink! And it starts to get a lil chilly so i get to dress in lots of layers, snug beanies and scarfs. yes! I cant wait.

So thats it for now i believe!
I wont be doing anything extra for my birthday this year- just hoping to be able to honor, remember and realize all the love and fine points of this super odd world and existence on it.

Much love to all,
-Chelsea Rose

Up coming art shows, new water color painting and another body painting shot

This is going to be a busy month!

This Friday is the opening artist reception of the annual Myth and Legend art show in Vancouver Washington:

I have three pieces in this group show!

Myth and Legend
February 5-27, 2010
Artist Reception First Friday February 5. 5-9pm
North Bank Gallery
1005 Main st.
Vancouver, WA 98660
360-693-1840
11:30am-430:00p Tues-sat

.....I don't know what to expect really but i am in absolute love with the art on the show post card! Not to mention its in Vancouver WA ( about 20 mins away from us in Portland, Oregon) which is where i am starting to recognize and become a part of some amazing independent art groups and events.

and then both Danny and I have a piece in this show coming up this month too:

The 5th Annual Portland Love Show
Work by Over 300 Artists about All Different Types of Love
February 12th - March 13th, 2010
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OPENING
February 12th, 2010
7pm-12am
Free! We also submitted one of the black white and red body painting shots from my shoot "Your Body is Your Temple" under our Lucid Optic Lab shop name.

So yay for group shows and finally getting more and more active in our local art communities and happenings.

Meanwhile, I have three new body painting/photo shoots each booked for the next three Saturdays! Yikes!
...i cant wait till i have this body painting project done. After two more shoots i will begin on the second half of this project which will be painting white paint on dark skin. I have my first dark model to paint Feb. 20th- cant wait to see how that comes out. I am still un sure of whether or not i should be photographing my dark models in front of the black back drop as you see in the photos i have already from the project, or if i should switch to white in hopes of making them contrast more. Like i said....gonna have to experiment a bit which is always the most fun anyhow.

I wanted to share a water color painting i did last weekend while i was in Southern Oregon on the Wolf Creek Sanctuary land visiting dear friends Wonder and TJ:

(Original watercolor painting by Chelsea Rose )
....After a nice long hike up to the sun alter with our Drums, into the heights of the wood Danny and I returned to Wonder's lovely RV named Soma. By the time we made it in, the woods were super wet and chilly and so were we. We hung out in Soma, changed into dry clothes and decided to rest up a bit. I ended up pulling out my Prang water color set and had an amazing time absentmindedly painting this piece while listing to the rain pelt the roof. Found memories indeed. I dont know what it is about that piece of land but its extremely inspiring. I would love to set up a lil painting studio in the back of the big barn( which is sorta being used as a supply room right now but has lots of nice big windows that look into the creek bed) and paint for a week or two in there. yes!! maybe someday when i can afford the time off from work.

....Yesterday Danny and I went to the art store to stock up on supplies. i was running super low on canvas and we also had to get hanging kits to set up our pieces for the love show art submission. last night i got a lot of painting done and i think i shall soon have a new painting to show everyone based off of this pen and ink i did awhile ago:

(original pen and ink drawing by Chelsea Rose )

...so stay tuned for that and much more to come.

Today is first thursday- meaning there will be a tun of art openings tonight all around town. So danny and I are planning on hoppin around and checkin out whats what! I am hoping to find some more local inspiration make some more community connections and enjoy the night. Wish us luck.

So, best wishes to all.

Peace n Love,
-Chelsea Rose

Solo Gallery show UPDATE and new Watercolor paintings

I'm super excited to officially announce:

If you are in the area( Portland Oregon) come visit me on September 18th at T.Ruth Artspace and take part in my opening art gallery reception: there will be plenty of trippy psychedelic paintings to behold as you sip wine and enjoy these last moments of blissful summer. This will be my first solo gallery show ever....so support will be ever so much appreciated.

Danny designed this little flyer for my upcoming show using my painting "The Faery Guide". However the design was rejected by the local publications for the naked faerie breast. I guess In Portland naked bike rides are OK, but not naked faerie paintings. We are still going to print this flyer at home and do the some xeroxing and Guerrilla distribution. As for the official postcard flyer, we redesigned everything to a classic invitation layout and went with my "River Spirit" painting(3 eyed fish) for the image. From what i understand we should have the official postcard flyers all finished and printed this week, so i will scan the finished product and "show and tell" when all is ready!

...im still working like mad to produce a few more smaller pieces for the show. At the moment i will have about 9 of my larger pieces showing and about 6+ smaller pieces in between. The gallery is a bit snug, but super charming- so i think i have plenty of material to pack the joint. cant wait to see how it all turns out! And for those of you who can not make it, no worries- i will take some photos ; )

In other news, I finally bought some more water color paper so i was inspired to brake out the paints! Its been a very long time since i have dabbled with water color- i almost forgot how much fun this medium is. Its been a wonderful thing, being able to play with WC after working with acrylic for so long- a much needed change.

Here are some of my WC experiments:

In Full Bloom
9"x12" Original watercolor painting
by Chelsea Rose

Evening Gown
9"x12" original watercolor painting
by Chelsea Rose

- Both of these were done on the same day. On a recent Saturday morning i was woken up at 6:20 sharp by my faithful-super obnoxious and fuzzy alarm - my cat, Sushi. I went into the living room, put on a movie and was getting ready to doze back asleep curled up on the couch when i remembered something exciting. A few days ago I had purchased some watercolor paper and have been forced to ignore it because of all the other projects i have to get done. I was certainly swept up in a good bit of reverie as i hurriedly hunted for my watercolor paint storage box. It took some digging to find it, and then i spent the rest of the morning in complete meditation: myself and my watercolor.

The next day i painted this one:

Sweet Water Gem
9"x12" original watercolor painting
by Chelsea Rose

I started it out with a quick pencil sketch to get the outlines down. I then did a wash for the background from blue to green( sprinkled some salt for a tad bit of texture)- once that was dry i began going into the eyes and the scales. Slowly adding shadow and more and more color.
The last thing i did was use my new super fat Faber castell india ink brush pens( compliment of Mr. Wonder Randy Tooth for my birthday. thank you!) to go and do some black outlining of the main shapes of the piece.

I got some positive feedback on these pieces when i put them up on my flickr page which was encouraging since these were certainly experimental and rough since i have been away from the medium for so long. In my watercolor storage bin i have a couple different brands of tube watercolors-some super fine quality ones that i purchased on sale when i was working for Art Supply Warehouse, but strangely enough i totally bypassed those tubes and went straight for my dirty old Prang watercolor set( do you remember prang? its what they used to give us in public school to use.) And i was pleasantly surprised with how vibrant the Prang paint ended up being. It just goes to show its really not that important how fancy and nice your materials are- as long as your able to express yourself and produce work from the heart!

In other news-
Yesterday Danny and I went to go see Karah, an artist friend of mine, at a place called The Manor of Art, Milepost 5 where she had participated in a huge art show featuring 100 artists- but with an interesting twist: They had taken over a yet to be renovated old folks home( built in the early 20s and has been used for many different purposed over the years)- every artist was assigned a room and aloud to make it into one big piece of artwork. As danny and i walked around this trippy(slightly spooky) building- we were awed as we journeyed the three floors and wandered in and out of all 100 rooms that really felt more like mini parallel universe. karahs room was super wonderful- she had taken large square cuts of green grass and tiled them in the room to create an rather earthy carpet. She displayed her pottery pieces( interesting plant holders that remind me of honey combs and mushrooms at the same time) while a friend of hers did elaborate hypnotic pen and ink drawings + fabric and flower creations on the walls.

It would be impossible to accurately describe the various scenes we walked into last evening but i can try- there was one room where someone had built up a wooden shooting gallery( like the ones you see at carnivals) where he crudely arranged pictures of Bush, Obama, Cheney, Micheal Jackson and more + beer bottles, cans- there was a Bebe gun wired to the booth- which you used to take shots at it all. it was wondrous fun. This art show is so hard to describe because it was sooo far out there. I loved it to death and went home bursting full of inspiration.

Whats also very interesting about The Manor of Art, Milepost 5 - they will be turning all of those rooms, once renovated, into super cheap/affordable artist studios. Right now they already have a live on/art studio thing going on made specially for the starving artist, or art student. There are some rooms that are fully equipped with room, sink, shower and all- others are simply rooms and down the halls are community bathrooms. They have a community kitchen, a wonderful courtyard with stage and more.

Im so glad Karah invited me to come and behold such a trippy/super awe inspiring art project. Im also very happy to know about The Manor of Art- it warms the heart to know that places like this do infact exist.

So thats all the latest news. Stay tuned- there is more to come.

Much love to all,
-Chelsea Rose

I was so disoriented when I looked out of my window this morning. I thought all this snow business was over with, but no! However I find that I am beginning to love the snow. I love the calm quiet blanket it seems to through over this busy city and my rush rush routine. Snow is so beautiful and very transformative. I love to sit in my rocking chair with a mug of tea in my hand, my cat on my lap....and watch the snow fluttering in the winds, collecting on the rooftops and trees. It is refreshing, thats what. Unfortunately when i awoke this morning the snow had already fallen, and only left an inch. Sadly enough by 11:00 this morning all the snow had already melted away.
Today i took the bus to work, partly because i dont like driving in the snow/hate driving in general/generally suck at driving....I have to take 2 buses to work. It takes me about an hour and 20 minutes to get there, and an hour and 20 to get home. I am finding that i really dont mind at all as long as i have a good book to read. Riding the bus gives me some much needed space out time...and i have found its the only place i tend to get any reading done these days. Today i started reading "The Psychedelic Experience, A manual based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead" by Timothy Leary. Its very interesting and speaks of ways in which a person can go through processes to strip away all of the mundane programing/conditioning that has been forced upon the mind through society/life style and environment....and how being free of all that mess one can finally experience the brain completely unbound and limitless resulting in consciousness expansion and for those dedicated and most attune: reaching the sacred state of nirvana.
Interesting quote from the book: " There are those who, in virtue of concentration and other yogic practices are able to bring the subconscious into the realm of discriminative consciousness and, thereby, to draw upon the unrestricted treasury of subconscious memory, wherein are stored the records not only of our past lives but the records of the past of our race, the past of humanity, and of all pre-human forms of life, if not of the very consciousness that makes life possible in this universe."-Lama Anagrika Govinda

Its almost Friday again. Danny did some really awesome screen printing over the last few days so i think we will be doing a photoshoot this weekend so we can start selling all these new silk screened clothings on etsy.....so stay tuned!
