I feel a strong pull in my life right now centering around transformation. The winds of change have recently made me gut my art room and turn my dining room into my new working studio. At first I wasn't thrilled about the idea. Having a dedicated room for art had its perks: it was so much easier to make a big art mess and then have a room to hide it in when i needed a break. However it was too easy to forget about my art projects. Now that my creative work space is out in the open again i cant ignore my half finished paintings because they stare me in the face! Culture Control show + new painting in the works

This weekend was most enjoyable and fairly productive.<br /><br />On Saturday we checked out the Culture Control art/music fest at Paper Tiger and NW Shirts:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/5154491917/" title="Culture Control v2 by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Culture Control v2" height="335" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4042/5154491917_bfd850378b.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />Can you spot my two square paintings in the midst? As always Olin did not disappoint- the art and the music was a true treat and i am honored to be a part of the show. I am thinking about putting in some purple next, we shall see.<br /><br />Also managed to get a lot of the design/layout prep done for the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/sets/72157623003286474/"><strong>body art</strong></a> book i am self publishing. Time keeps flying by and i have to have them ready and printed for December so it feels good to be getting somewhere with the project. New painting, Rainbow Roots + giant Ebru marbling

It was an art-filled two days off, which always makes for the most refreshing of weekends.<br /><br />I managed to finish a painting i have been working on:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/5070064409/" title="rainbow roots by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="rainbow roots" height="403" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4089/5070064409_97ee1a13a7.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />Rainbow Roots<br />14" x 14" stretched canvas<br />Original acrylic painting by Chelsea Rose<br /><br />....I started this painting one night with the need to paint without plan or even thought. I let my subconscious come out and man the paintbrush and watched rather amused at the various shapes and creatures that came out.<br />I did change it up a lot after the initial out pour:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/5037330185/" title="melting eye beam- work in progress by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="melting eye beam- work in progress" height="207" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4111/5037330185_9429c34fac_m.jpg" width="240" /></a><br />...if you compare that to the finished one above, you'll see what i mean about changes. But all in all, this painting was very fun to paint. I gave myself no rules or guidelines and just got to "play" and express. I hope to let myself do more of these spurr of the moment paintings- it was a nice break from my usual tight/planned out creations.<br /><br />Meanwhile, my other half ( and often Better half) worked on a project that he has had up his sleeve for months now- a GIGANTIC Ebru( turkish paper marbling) project:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidopticlab/5069914269/" title="Making Ebru by Lucid Optic Lab, on Flickr"><img alt="Making Ebru" height="450" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4088/5069914269_56b9d99073.jpg" width="292" /></a><br />This is just one snapshot i took of about a billion of him throughout the creation process. He built a huge container for this project out of wood which he then filled up with thickened water so that he could float acrylic paint on the surface, manipulate as seen in the photo above through "combing" and then take a single mono print of the effect via paper. Yesterday he made two such prints with different colors and designs. The thickened water should stay good for about a week so he has time to make a bunch more prints. In the meantime this huge container has taken over the dining room so we have been eating at the coffee table :)<br />....more info with photos on this will be posted as the project progresses!<br /><br />And a couple snapshots of me bouncing around the artroom:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/5068341773/" title="Artroom snapshot by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Artroom snapshot" height="396" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4089/5068341773_f63860f3ae.jpg" width="450" /></a><br />I did some digging around and cleaning out in the art room which lead me to the discovery of a big stack of some of my very old art- some dating back to elementary school years! I posted some of my better old artwork finds on the art room closet couple with a few "inspiration" pieces from other artists. All this lead me to even go back and look at old sketch book journals- its really fascinating to look on old artwork and see how your style and technique has changed through the years. Its comforting to see my own creative evolution and realize that it shouldn't ever stop morphing. I am interested to see what my art will look like in a few more years!<br /><br />...and a dready update in front of my art room inspiration wall:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/5068951362/" title="Art room and dreadies by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Art room and dreadies" height="359" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4091/5068951362_5757791013.jpg" width="450" /></a><br />My dreadies have gotten a bit longer i think! My dreads are back to the same length my hair was before i dreaded the locks up. Shrinking is normal in the maturing stages of the dreading of ones hair so i am pleased that i have finally been able to get past all that and see a bit of growth, even if its only slight! The henna color I put in a month or so ago is almost completely gone and i am thinking about doing it again- it felt soooo good on my scalp and the red made me feel like a Celtic fiery maned huntress :P<br /><br />Anyhoo....we harvested a bunch of the Basil we grew from seed on our patio:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/5068304711/" title="Home grown Basil by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Home grown Basil" height="285" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4152/5068304711_15e2a83b0e.jpg" width="450" /></a><br />isn't it purdy?<br />We made a pesto sauce out of it which we ate over cheese tortellini with roasted garlic cloves- yum!<br />...Looks like we should probably bring our edibles in from the patio today or very soon before the first frost catches!<br /><br />And yes, i am already loving October with every bit of my soul.<br /><br />Best wishes,<br />-Chelsea Rose

Mermaid Dreams- finished painting + painting process photos

Initially i loved her pose and the feelings she conveyed but disliked the drawing. Eventually i decided to make prints available and quickly noted she became one of my best selling drawings.<br /><br />I also ended up making a pen and ink over acrylic version which was done on masonite for a commision. I created an extra one in yellow... which i still have:<br /><img src="http://ny-image0.etsy.com/il_430xN.154472056.jpg" /><br />...she is up for sale as well, going for $40. Check out the listing <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/50347401/yellow-mermaid-ink-over-acrylic-painting"><strong>here</strong></a>.<br /><br />After some time i felt the need to do a big acrylic painting of a mermaid and decided to model it after my pen and ink drawing above.<br />So i used the original drawing and projected the image onto canvas where i traced the basic outlines to create the framework of the painting.<br /><br />A snapshot of the paintings humble beginnings:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4816821249/" title="work in progress by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="work in progress" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4139/4816821249_4de12df6d0.jpg" width="335" /></a><br />...this shows the very first layering's of color i began with. I was still in the "feeling things out" stage at this point. If you compare it to the finished product a bunch of these changed!<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4827974753/" title="Working on my Mermaid by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Working on my Mermaid" height="359" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4134/4827974753_c11946a553.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />....as you can see here the very first thing i did was restructure the face and remake the headdress/hair. I got rid of the lil bindy and added a third eye instead. The lil "nubs" i had sprouting from the head wasn't cutting it so i added, tentacles, fin like dread tendrils instead- which was a lot of fun to paint because of all the lil loops and spirals i got to play with.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4874075534/" title="work in progress- mermaid by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="work in progress- mermaid" height="383" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4117/4874075534_8cc109fda2.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />....I took the painting out to a few of the local art fairs so that i could work on her while i was tending the booth. It was this day that i did a lot of work on the tail. As seen here i added a lot more side fin to the lower tail. I was also beginning to contemplate the stark emptiness of the background and was throwing around the idea of adding fish, another mermaid....anything!<br />I was happy to get a lot of questions and general interest when out and about with the painting but what was most bazaar is almost everyone asked me if i was painting MYSELF as the mermaid. I really had not intended this to be some kind of self portrait but a lot of people insisted on it. This made me smile and remember something someone very close to me said as a lil girl. My mom worked for an old Hebrew mystic who was also an amazing painter( he was very old school and used egg tempera paint that he made himself) and he used to always say to me " A true artist only ever paints themselves," wether they mean it or not- this always made me giggle.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4884303844/" title="bubbles-work in progress by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="bubbles-work in progress" height="358" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4117/4884303844_85e40a04af.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />( sorry for this photos horrid quality)<br />....Here you can see i added big poofy hip side fins and finally began to remedy the "emptiness" of the background with bubbles.<br />The bubbles started out here and there...and i really liked the depth they began to suggest so i decided to keep them and expand upon them bit by bit.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4894961340/" title="Mermaid-work in progress by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Mermaid-work in progress" height="379" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4077/4894961340_97bc34f1e9.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />....the bubbles kept on multiplying. I started adding smaller lil jets of silvery bubbles and made the bottom of the canvas a darker blue to help hint at deep dark sea.<br />I took the above photo on my birthday- Aug.15 and so the painting sat untouched for quite some time. I was pretty unhappy with it at this point. I felt all the bubbles crowded the image...and i detested the fact that it was now time to work on the hands( my least fave part of any drawing/painting i do.) The painting was pretty much in this same state when i finally promised myself i would finish it up this past weekend- no matter what!<br />I did all the finishing work in about 6 hours which included darkening the bottom sea again, adding more bubbles, removing some bubbles, adding more shimming light from above, going back into all the of color for one last "ping" of color, going over all the black outlines and adding more spiraling and detail, added a few more spiral tendrils of hair, more color and volume to the closed eyelids, blue to skin and lips( to make her look more like she is in water), and finally the hands( which i spent about a half an hour muttering and cursing under my breath as i worked at them in a frenzy to some extremely horrible and chaotic sitar music...and was very close to having a nervous breakdown. Luckily Danny saved me by turning the music off which kind of broke the spell and i was able to get the hands to somewhat behave finally.)<br /><br />So yes...she is done! Did i mention i love mermaids very muchly so and they have always been a folk symbol that i deeply identified with? I was drawing bare breasted mermaids when i was 5 and never did stop. I grew up at the beach, lolling in the whiteraff with my legs firmly held together as i pretended to be a lovely flesh eating mermaid hunting the local tourists and surfers.<br />They will always fascinate me and when ever i am in the water- be it a pool, ocean or river you ll see me swimming fast and furious, legs held firmly together like a mermaid.<br /><br />Much love and many blessings,<br />-Chelsea Rose<br /><br />P.S.<br />Lots of body painting coming up. I have them all ready at hand right next to my art table to skim through for inspiration- mostly finding them a goldmine to expound upon. I look at the books and see stored potential, stored energy eager to manifest someday into a newly executed drawing or painting. I also find it endlessly fascinating to look at the sketchbooks and see my style of drawing slowly morphing and changing direction. I am eager to see how my style changes in a few short years.<br /><br />I am about a weekends worth of work away from finishing another painting sparked by a drawing of mine. More Body painting session photos + new ink over acrylic paintings

So, in case you noticed i missed my blog update for last Friday i was in California visiting my family- so yee be warned this is a rather lengthy blog post since i am trying to catch up! I arrived back in Portland late night on Saturday and had Sunday to acclimate back into the groove of things. I was able to post 3 more photos from my most recent body painting shoot and i also took the time to document and list some new artwork for sale. In about an hour i shot about 400 photos- which has left me with a bunch to pick and choose from. it has taken me awhile to narrow the catch down to a chosen few but i am making progress.<br />I am looking forward to this weekend's shoot with a lovely elderly woman- she will add some mature beauty and wisdom to the project- widening the age range and body type spectrum. I know i have said it before... but its interesting to see the twists and turns this project has made. I coat my canvas or pieces of wood with white gesso and then once it dries paint the background flat bright color. I then go in and use an India ink pen by Faber castell to do my line work. This allows for a lot of freedom and since the process is quick and fun it makes the artwork especially affordable and customizable. Feel free to place a custom order request - if you have a certain <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/sets/72157610826119454/"><strong>drawing</strong></a> of mine you want visited in this manner on a certain color. Id be happy to do such a commission!<br /><br />In other news, while i was out of town danny held the fort by himself and set up a small booth of our art wares at the Last Thursday Artwalk on Alberta st fair:<br /><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4136/4740994623_fc40464e43.jpg" /><br />The fair was swelling with people and vendors hanging out in the bright sunlight- i am so sorry to have missed it! Sidewalk Art Sale + Finished painting

This weekend was lovely with all of its sunshine and activity. It seems Portland had come alive, to be quickly followed by rain again. Oh well, at least we had a nice stretch of sunny weekend before the rain returns.<br />On Saturday Danny and I were to watch <a href="http://www.truthartspace.com/"><strong>T.Ruth art space gallery</strong></a> for the day. We had the idea to set up a lil sidewalk art sale to see if we could catch the interest of the passer byes. All most all of my herb and flower seeds have sprouted! I hope they grow up quickly so i can enjoy them before the summer is gone and the cold seeps back into place.)<br /><br />So i painted in the gallery from 1-6pm and was able to finish the painting i was working on<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4694424387/" title="final touches by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="final touches" height="284" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4043/4694424387_2ecbc33ba8.jpg" width="450" /></a><br />On Sunday i managed to paint the sides of the canvas black, sign, date and varnish the painting. Today when i am home from work i will do my best to get a good, crisp photo of the finished painting in its whole to share.<br /><br />On Sunday i was also able to schedule another body painting photo shoot for this coming Sunday the 19th! It will be another white paint on dark skin painting/photo session. I hope it all works out and that the plans do not fall through!<br />Also excited to learn that Danny and I will be putting some artwork into a group show in Vancouver. The theme is Freedom. Craft in the Village, painting in progress and Fuchsia blooms

I had a wondrous time at Craft in the Village in Vancouver WA for the first Friday of June . It was our first time vending at the occasion, even though we have been to hang and play before.<br />The weather report predicted rain for Friday so we ended up downsizing our tent set up to a single table under an awning. It worked out just right in the end, and we did wonderfully.<br /><br /><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4044/4672920123_6d5f2b5c59.jpg" /><br />( photo compliments of friend and photographer <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kermitlover/"><strong>Anni Becker</strong></a> )<br /><br />I sold a good many 5" x 7" prints + got a commission for an 8" x 10" pen and ink over acrylic painted canvas of my <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/3879438665/in/set-72157610826119454/"><strong>Love Thy Self mermaid drawing</strong></a>.<br /><br />Danny sold a bunch of his <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidopticlab/4357944895/"><strong>stenciled records</strong></a> and some of his <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidopticlab/sets/72157616198908898/"><strong>screen prints</strong></a> as well.<br /><br />But the fun started when i met an amazing artist: Cori Bethune. She was a beautiful voluptuous black woman with multicolor dreads selling colored pencil portraits she was making of empowered ethnic women. She also just so happens to be a reggae singer. You can check out her music via myspace <a href="http://www.myspace.com/lumarijah"><strong>here</strong></a>. Of course, i asked her to be a part of my <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/sets/72157623003286474/"><strong>body painting project</strong></a> and she was instantly very much positive and excited about lending her energy to the project. Now all we have to do is nail down a date for the body painting/photo session. I cant wait! This will be my third white paint on dark skin body painting.<br /><br />The remainder of the day was charmed.<br /><a href="http://thespaceartcollective.blogspot.com/"><strong>The Space artist collective</strong></a> was bustling with activity:<br /><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1287/4673021863_1f7a16b264.jpg" /><br />( photo compliments of friend and photographer <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kermitlover/"><strong>Anni Becker</strong></a> )<br /><br />They had a live poetry reading, which i volunteered to read a poem of mine that i just so happened to have in my purse. Then there was a wondrous open drum circle, live music by The Shivas and Sea of Oaks ( both local bands to Vancouver WA ). Danny And I hung out inside <a href="http://www.truthartspace.com/"><strong>T.Ruth artspace gallery</strong></a> greeting folks who came in to have a look at the art. I brought the painting that i started a week or so ago to work on and i got a LOT done on it:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4676674562/" title="work in progress by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="work in progress" height="314" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4050/4676674562_434eff80af.jpg" width="450" /></a><br />( 14" x 14" acrylic painting-unfinished)<br />Here is what i have thus far. Got the first layers of color pretty much mapped out. Couple more layers of color and highlight would do. Plus im still undecided as to what to do with her hands. I don’t like the orb idea so much as i thought i would. maybe she could be holding a flower? or a purse? or a dagger? Or perhaps the orb just needs to turn into an eyeball? or have an eyeball inside of it? I will have to do more tinkering...then we shall see.<br /><br />Sunday was a lazy day spent sleeping in and listening to the rain pound the roof. I had some great moments out on the patio enjoying cups of tea and watching humming birds wizz past to enjoy the Fuchsia bloom nectar:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4675882891/" title="blooms by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="blooms" height="298" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4049/4675882891_a2f36f1b6a.jpg" width="450" /></a><br />Danny snapped this photo as i enjoyed being surrounding by the blooms on the patio. Fuchsia plants are so enchanting...something about them really sets my imagination off. I finally found a good place to hang my Faery wall art that my cousin holly bought for me years ago. I think she is happy hanging out by all the blooms. A few weeks ago i planted a bunch of seeds in pots on my patio. The first things to sprout were the various sorts of wild flower mixes, next was the morning glories flowers and third was the Thyme. We are still waiting for the rosemary, basil, Serrano chilies and chamomile to sprout. *crossin fingers*<br /><br />Thats about all the news i can muster.
