SE Area Artwalk Portland Oregon

So its Monday after a long weekend of art vending. I am bone tired but its that soothing "accomplished" exhaustion so, I am sitting here writing to you, smiling a lot while sipping tea.... reminiscing over the past couple days.<br /><br />I wanted to share some photos from the <a href="http://snackword.netfirms.com/seportlandartwalk.com/default.htm"><strong>8th annual SE Area Portland Art Walk</strong></a>:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/5505365490/" title="SE Area Art walk PDX set up by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="SE Area Art walk PDX set up" height="298" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5256/5505365490_a600f04ce1.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />This was my set up. It was the first time I used these free standing grid walls as my display and I really liked it. It was nice having <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/sets/72157610826099576/"><strong>my painting/illustration</strong></a> on one side with <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/sets/72157623003286474/"><strong>my Goddess body art photography</strong></a> on the other. His work has been described as "expressionistic surrealism", or what he calls "an experiment in cross-pollination and emergence: emancipated realism". I hope to post photos of Mark and his set up once Danny has all the images cropped and formatted.<br /><a href="http://www.paintwithjoanne.com/"><strong>Joanne Licardo</strong></a> - (pictured early in the post) amazing oil painter as well as oil painting teacher. I especially love her mandala paintings. She also does some "traditional old master technique" inspired work.<br /><br />This event was huge with over 200 artists participating all around the SE Portland area. I am truly looking forward to doing this again for next year!<br /><br />So now that its all over I need to organize my art room. It looks like I let a rabid kangaroo have its way with the studio so excuse my absence for a few days as I put my home back together again and let the dust settle.<br /><br />Thanks so much to all the brave souls who came out to journey through this massive art walk and support local artists. Eternal Canvas a short story by Chelsea Rose

Happy Friday all.<br />For the first time on my blog I am going to share a short fiction story I wrote.<br />I am particpating in a <a href="http://greenwoman.wordpress.com/2010/12/03/in-which-you-are-invited-to-a-party/"><strong>fiction writing party</strong></a> a friend of mine holds once a month on her blog. The offical blog party begins on Sunday but seeing that i beleive i wont have much time to access the computer over the weekend i figured i would go ahead and post it today. Much love!<br /><br /><strong>"Eternal Canvas"<br />a short fiction story by Chelsea Rose Rippel</strong><br /><br />Tattered sleeves whisked wildly as the fringed and ragged hair of the paint brush swirled its <a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3270/3090397155_1716db6dc4.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3270/3090397155_1716db6dc4.jpg" style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 265px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 500px; CURSOR: hand" /></a>color leaving a torrential vomit of rainbow in its wake. The canvas was shadowed here and there by a looming figure so alive with energy the room radiated and glowed in the strange wafting warmth emitted. Yes, there she stood, her head cocked ever so to the right, pale lips parted, blood shot eyes intent yet soft focused on the canvas as she watched in her own fevered way the delicate bones, joints and sinuses of her hand weave strange and wondrous worlds. Each of her smoldering paint strokes focused the inexplicable webbing of truth that gathered at times like these as buds of daggered lightning, alighting from somewhere above, or was it in-between? It had always funneled this way, where ever it came from, straight into that whirling vein of energy that taped deep into the membrane of her crown. These spasms were impossible to ignore as they punctured and reverberated deep within that mysterious gland, always resting in its nest of brain matter, cozy in its den smack dab in the middle of her forehead, the location of what the ancient shamans deemed The Third Eye... <span class="fullpost"><br /><br />She paused, dropping the paint brush to free her hand so that she might press her finger tips to the throbbing ember that was her cranium. She had turned away from her work and all at once the spell was broken; she had been granted a reprieve. There yes, she rubbed the ache there, in-between the eyes, kneading it to milk the tension away only to find that the burning was contagious and had slowly flushed her entire system with spasms of feeling. Within that split second she became all too aware of bodily needs. The pain was more than severe so her knees buckled and she fell back, away from the easel, away from the varnishes, the glazes, the rags, the paint tubes. She landed in a crumple on her futon mattress, the only other furnishing in the closet sized dwelling.<br /><br />“What is this? Why is this? What day is it?” her intellect demanded. Her stomach, a hard knot, clenched and burned as if eating its way out of her. She blindly pawed at her body but felt nothing more than a series of lumps that seemed to be horribly brittle and sunken. She wanted to have a look in the mirror but no matter how hard her mind commanded the body to move its only response was a series of shudders- it just shivered in its huddle of bone and flesh on the bed. She laid like that without concept of time, with no other thought in her mind but the concentration needed for each breath taken and released.<br />--<br />Sparrow had successfully scavenged enough supplies to last them another month but it had taken longer than usual which added to his growing concern that soon there would be nothing left to salvage. How then would he continue to feed and clothe himself and Dove? He had dreams of seeds, of clean water and warm fertile soil to grow beans, tomatoes, carrots, celery, potato, squash and more. But the only food he had ever known came from a can and even if he had access to seeds the land had been left parched and toxic years before he had entered the world. And still, Sparrow had more immediate concerns to deal with. He had been gone for how many weeks? He hoped desperately that Dove had managed to keep away from her painting.<br /><br />Sparrow’s footsteps were harried and faltering in his rapid efforts to propel himself through oil slicked puddles. As he hurdled through alleyways, fingers of rusted barbed wire clawed at his coat, and he pushed himself harder, jolting through a maze of abandoned buildings. The concrete and steel behemoths were infested with a plethora of strange folks, street urchins, squatters, and who knows what other remnants of the human race—all struggling to survive.<br /><br />Why was he so worried? He had carefully packed away all her art materials before leaving on his hunt. Dove had promised to do her best to resist the calling she would inevitably feel. It had all started out simply enough, hadn’t it? They had found each other early on before either of them could speak more than a few words. It was a miracle they had come this far alone together, pitted against a self destructive and decaying world. Still, they had endured and Sparrow wasn’t about to give up now, even if their woes had begun to extend far beyond the dangers of the streets out into a great and unnerving mystery.<br /><br />But it wasn’t all that mysterious if one considered Dove and her habits. She always did have a need to draw. Sparrow had seen her first doing it on concrete, using the end of a burnt piece of wood to furiously mark out spirals, eyes, planets and a great number of other things they had no words for. As they grew together so did their interests and ambitions. Sparrow himself had always been a tinkerer, enjoying the thrill of improvised creation and invention. Dove continued to draw more frequently until she eventually began doing it by impulse no matter the situation.<br /><br />One day when Sparrow was down scavenging in the lower Warf end of what once was the great city’s epicenter, he came upon the ruins of a school. Anything of value seemed to have already been long since looted or destroyed by the moist and salty costal air. Yet as he had sifted through the rubble, things of color and shape began to catch his eye. Pieces of canvas they were with great swooping lines of jade and indigo making up the form of a hillside green with pasture. The next was drawn out in a frenzy of red scribbles that seemed to magically conjure up a detailed portrait of a young woman naked and posed as if reaching to the stars. There was more of this, much more and so he began to collect piles of these drawings, rolling them up all together as one to take back to Dove.<br /><br />Sparrow had spun around with an ecstatic spirit, thrilled to run back and present Dove with these gifts, but in his mad dash his foot caught on something hard. Falling forward he broke right through the rotted board of a closet only to reveal a great many storage tubs. With shaking hands he opened each container in awe as he began to see tubes of color, marvelously elegant brushes of all different shapes and jars containing important looking gels and liquids. Sparrow also found a great many pieces of pure white canvas stretched firm and taunt over wooden bars sealed tightly in protective plastic. The newness of it all gleamed and sparkled. He felt he had truly found a treasure trove.<br /><br />When Sparrow presented the loot to Dove, her face lit up like a lantern, and she gleefully sorted through the tubes of pigment. He helped her set up the easel he had found once he had replaced a few hinges. Sparrow remembers being absolutely astonished at how quickly and with such ease Dove utilized the supplies. No, she had never seen a paint brush or any of the other supplies yet she seemed to instinctively know what to do with each.<br /><br />This was all less than two months ago and ever since he watched Dove fall into an existence almost akin to slavery. Day in and day out she poured herself into her canvas paintings. If Sparrow was not there to care for her he doubted Dove’s ability to remember to eat or even to relieve herself. Painting had claimed her very existence almost entirely. When he did manage to pull Dove away from her work she seemed dazed, her jaw slack and her large marvelous eyes roving at a loss even when looking upon his face. Sparrow hadn’t a clue what to do, almost preferring the sharp focused and demon driver Dove then the listless, living dead Dove that he was confronted with when he pulled her away from her work.<br /><br />It was early morning, the sun just beginning to break the steely obsidian skin of the horizon, revealing a harsh and jagged skyline full of building remnants and swirling entities of bonfire smoke. The oddly prehistoric silhouetted forms of burnt out street lamps jutted every stretch of pavement like teeth serving as mocking reminders of a failed and ruined way of life. Their home, the abandoned water tower, was planted in one of the few plots of land void of large forsaken buildings. Sparrow snaked his way through the graveyard of junk that was piled high and deep, past old decomposing car shells, tires, broken furniture, computer equipment, stereos and televisions. The climb up the rusting side ladder to the tower was completed quickly and without thought or fear of the height.<br /><br />Normally Sparrow would pause once he got up the ladder to the door in order to gaze out on the wasted cityscape. He always felt that while there was a great ugliness present in the world they inhabited, there was also a profound sense of restorative slumber. The world “civilizations” might have toppled under the weight of their own greedy and reckless behavior, but he truly believed the earth itself was lying dormant, healing and waiting for some sign, maybe even someone to inspire her to adorn the globe once more in life eternal. He had to believe in such things otherwise there was nothing left for him and Dove other then rubble and decay. Still, this was not a time for a moment of deep breaths and hopeful dreams. He was frightened and shivering like a hunted rabbit worried about Dove and how she coped with his absence.<br /><br />When Sparrow opened the door to the tower there was no sign of Dove herself. With a shock and surge of great terror he noticed that the easel was back up and the canvas painting that sat upon it looked to be completed. The tiny bulb of a room the water tower provided for them was filled with a surging glow of every color imaginable all seemingly emitted from the canvas. He fumbled around fighting for the willpower to keep his eyes away from the mesmerizing whirl of sensations in order to search for Dove.<br /><br />“Sparrow….Here….The Bed….So glad…So glad” Dove gasped, using the minute amount of strength left within her to reach up and caress his hand.<br /><br />Sparrow’s entire body clenched in horror as he felt Dove’s hand slip into his own. It felt as though he was holding a paper thin bag of bones. He kneeled to cradle her waif thin form, resting his cheek next to her pillow. For some time they lay like this together communicating without words through the locking of their eyes. Dove’s eyes were vast and full of a strangeness Sparrow struggled to identify. Even in her obviously sick and wasted state Dove glowed with an eerie shimmer of potential; her beauty akin to the flowing grace of the sunset filled sky-precious and fleeting. In that moment he knew he couldn’t keep her. Dove was already drifting away, her essence only lingering to gaze the way she was with every grain of her being at him. Dove was smiling as she breathed her last rasping breath.<br /><br />Yet before Sparrow had time to let a single tear escape something blew like a shockwave filling the tower with a harsh pulsating light so bright he could momentarily see through his own flesh to the curves and contours of his bone. The light continued to surge until all was lost in an endless expanse of white. Sparrow was left alone. Dove’s form disappeared with the rest of his world. Yet in some strange sense it was fitting to him. He wasn’t sure he wanted to be a part of a world without Dove.<br /><br />“So, why am I still here?” Sparrow pleaded, his hoarse cry rippling off into a chorus of echoes, stretching out to eventually lose itself in the great white. And<br />as if in answer to his plea, Dove’s painting appeared before him, hovering at eye level. For the first time since Dove had begun her masterpiece Sparrow allowed himself to truly behold the painting without the clouds of worry and fear for her well being to dull his senses. It was a thing of mesmerizing beauty, the detail so intrinsic and the colors so alive he swore he could taste them.<br /><br />Sparrow began to comprehend the subject matter, it was what the art books would label as a landscape yet it was much more than that, so lucid it felt more to him like a waking dream trapped in rectangular form. In the very middle stood their water tower taken over by a wild spiraling of vine boasting a plethora of ultra violet trumpet flowers. The plot of surrounding land was void of the rusting multitude of rubbish, replaced by a smooth even pack of rich chocolate tinted earth. The horizon stretched on and on, the jagged dilapidated buildings that once made up the skyline were gone and replaced here and there by a lacing of misty ever green trees that parted to reveal the tips of the coast that possessed an ocean glowing emerald and gold in the setting sun.<br /><br />The stark white emptiness of his surroundings compounded the life and promise within the painting that continued to hover like a dream before him. Furthermore, he could feel the essence of Dove radiating off of the painting like the summer sun. Her spirit held him, caressed him and eased him closer to the work of art.<br /><br />“It’s all done now, Sparrow. Please look after it, care for it. It’s yours.” The voice of his Dove breathed and exuded the words like the most precious of gems and Sparrow smiled joyfully, suddenly aware that she was waiting for him within. Without hesitation Sparrow leaped into the painting, each brush stroke remaking him whole until he stood once more atop their water tower, gazing into the realness of Dove’s great transformation. He scurried down the ladder eagerly kicking off his worn shoes to plant his feet deep into the warm and supple soil. Bittersweet tears of loss and renewal flowed freely down his astonished features as he saw and felt Dove in every drop of life eternal around and within him. And look! There were his tomatoes, and there carrots, squash, cabbage and more.<br /><br />Sparrow tore his eyes away from the patchwork of his great garden and spied an assortment of confused yet overjoyed huddles of people dotting the landscape here and there as far as his eyes could see. He understood now. Dove. She had done all this. The world he saw, felt and breathed was an exactment of her masterpiece. Dove’s vision was that something, that someone, the catalyst for the forgiveness and return of Gaia, Mother Earth.<br /><br />Sparrow’s heart sang with inspiration as he began his trek to the nearest group of fellow survivors. He understood that a lot of work was ahead of them and he was full of motivation, savoring thoughts of community, harmony and the return of man to its sacred role of caretaker to the land. And yet Sparrow couldn’t help but wonder just how many worlds man would burn through before The Great Balance was finally actualized. </span>

I was truly outraged by this and confronted them about it. I pretty much said that i was very uncomfortable with their presence at what is supposed to be a community based independent artwork festival. I hope i made my disgust known enough for them to think twice about setting up again. This may be a sign that its the beginning of the end for the Alberta arts festivals but i am determined to not be too disheartened. We will see how it goes for September's last Thursday art walk.<br /><br />...Oh and for those who are wondering why my dreads are suddenly red- i colored it with Henna( all natural plant based hair coloring!)<br />The process was pretty messy and looked something like this:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4925380815/" title="Henna Bath by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Henna Bath" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4077/4925380815_5a745465d2.jpg" width="334" /></a><br />but i had fun making the mess as always and the henna was so soothing and healing for my scalp.<br />The color change was pretty dramatic as you can see- but i love it! Change is good.<br /><br />Danny has been super busy finsing these huge screens for a Buddha silkscreen/marbling project he has in the works:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidopticlab/4942466536/" title="buddha screens by Lucid Optic Lab, on Flickr"><img alt="buddha screens" height="269" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4099/4942466536_bd38bdf22d.jpg" width="440" /></a><br />As you can see- he is all done with the three screens needed to make up his 3 color Buddha print. Instead of using the photo emulsion method of creating these silkscreens he hand painted them with drawing fluid. The next step is getting all his supplies ready to begin marbling big sheets of paper that he will then print the buddha onto. i cant wait to see the outcome but we have to wait awhile and let the $$ come in so that he can purchase all the supplies.<br /><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4935036795/" title="us by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="us" height="345" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4076/4935036795_471b3d0a4c.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />a quick snap of Danny and I over the weekend. I look at the books and see stored potential, stored energy eager to manifest someday into a newly executed drawing or painting. I also find it endlessly fascinating to look at the sketchbooks and see my style of drawing slowly morphing and changing direction. I am eager to see how my style changes in a few short years.<br /><br />I am about a weekends worth of work away from finishing another painting sparked by a drawing of mine. Craft in the Village, painting in progress and Fuchsia blooms

I had a wondrous time at Craft in the Village in Vancouver WA for the first Friday of June . It was our first time vending at the occasion, even though we have been to hang and play before.<br />The weather report predicted rain for Friday so we ended up downsizing our tent set up to a single table under an awning. It worked out just right in the end, and we did wonderfully.<br /><br /><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4044/4672920123_6d5f2b5c59.jpg" /><br />( photo compliments of friend and photographer <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kermitlover/"><strong>Anni Becker</strong></a> )<br /><br />I sold a good many 5" x 7" prints + got a commission for an 8" x 10" pen and ink over acrylic painted canvas of my <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/3879438665/in/set-72157610826119454/"><strong>Love Thy Self mermaid drawing</strong></a>.<br /><br />Danny sold a bunch of his <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidopticlab/4357944895/"><strong>stenciled records</strong></a> and some of his <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidopticlab/sets/72157616198908898/"><strong>screen prints</strong></a> as well.<br /><br />But the fun started when i met an amazing artist: Cori Bethune. She was a beautiful voluptuous black woman with multicolor dreads selling colored pencil portraits she was making of empowered ethnic women. She also just so happens to be a reggae singer. You can check out her music via myspace <a href="http://www.myspace.com/lumarijah"><strong>here</strong></a>. Of course, i asked her to be a part of my <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/sets/72157623003286474/"><strong>body painting project</strong></a> and she was instantly very much positive and excited about lending her energy to the project. Now all we have to do is nail down a date for the body painting/photo session. I cant wait! This will be my third white paint on dark skin body painting.<br /><br />The remainder of the day was charmed.<br /><a href="http://thespaceartcollective.blogspot.com/"><strong>The Space artist collective</strong></a> was bustling with activity:<br /><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1287/4673021863_1f7a16b264.jpg" /><br />( photo compliments of friend and photographer <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kermitlover/"><strong>Anni Becker</strong></a> )<br /><br />They had a live poetry reading, which i volunteered to read a poem of mine that i just so happened to have in my purse. Then there was a wondrous open drum circle, live music by The Shivas and Sea of Oaks ( both local bands to Vancouver WA ). Danny And I hung out inside <a href="http://www.truthartspace.com/"><strong>T.Ruth artspace gallery</strong></a> greeting folks who came in to have a look at the art. I brought the painting that i started a week or so ago to work on and i got a LOT done on it:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4676674562/" title="work in progress by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="work in progress" height="314" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4050/4676674562_434eff80af.jpg" width="450" /></a><br />( 14" x 14" acrylic painting-unfinished)<br />Here is what i have thus far. Got the first layers of color pretty much mapped out. Couple more layers of color and highlight would do. Plus im still undecided as to what to do with her hands. I don’t like the orb idea so much as i thought i would. maybe she could be holding a flower? or a purse? or a dagger? Or perhaps the orb just needs to turn into an eyeball? or have an eyeball inside of it? I will have to do more tinkering...then we shall see.<br /><br />Sunday was a lazy day spent sleeping in and listening to the rain pound the roof. I had some great moments out on the patio enjoying cups of tea and watching humming birds wizz past to enjoy the Fuchsia bloom nectar:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4675882891/" title="blooms by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="blooms" height="298" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4049/4675882891_a2f36f1b6a.jpg" width="450" /></a><br />Danny snapped this photo as i enjoyed being surrounding by the blooms on the patio. Fuchsia plants are so enchanting...something about them really sets my imagination off. I finally found a good place to hang my Faery wall art that my cousin holly bought for me years ago. I think she is happy hanging out by all the blooms. A few weeks ago i planted a bunch of seeds in pots on my patio. The first things to sprout were the various sorts of wild flower mixes, next was the morning glories flowers and third was the Thyme. We are still waiting for the rosemary, basil, Serrano chilies and chamomile to sprout. *crossin fingers*<br /><br />Thats about all the news i can muster. Apparition of Truth- more body painting photos from the series

So its Monday and in many ways i feel like clawing my own eyes out, roasting them in garlic and feeding them to my cat. But i will refrain. I promise.<br />The weekend was wonderful. Should be fun!<br />....The more i have thought about turning this body painting project of mine into a series that i could show in a gallery, the more i realized how out of budget printing and framing all of these photographs would be. So, today on my way home im planning on stoppin by the library to see if they have any HOW TO books on Grant writing. That would be a great way to deal with the expenses of printing and framing all the photos from this body painting series. Its worth a shot, at least.<br /><br />I have confirmed that i will be having my solo show in April at InOtherWords feminist book store. Which means i am kicking my butt into hyper gear to see how many more paintings i can produce before i have to begin the hanging.<br />Speaking of painting, danny took this photo over the weekend while i was fine tuning some of the details in the painting i am currently working on:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4392482703/" title="painting the sea witch by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="painting the sea witch" height="335" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2777/4392482703_6340d7b82a.jpg" width="500"></a><br />I should be done with this one in a day or two...whether i like it or not, it will be time to move on!<br /><br />....oh! Did i mention i woke up on Saturday with a guttural need to find a yard sale? Well danny and i ended up finding one. I love it. Its very sweet and simple with browns and yellows. It will be perfect to wear in the summer during the art fairs to keep my face out of the sun. Petal Pixie Painting + 1 year dreadhead anniversary!

So a week or two ago i had finished my latest painting but never managed to post the finished product. I created a very simplistic semi "impressionistic" background via color placement. I also actually painted hands this time instead of hiding them out of the way or turning them into flower sprouts and spirals. Turns out i can totally draw/paint hands- i just need to use references. no biggy! So while i would say i have yet to really embrace hand anatomy i am making some steps toward it which will hopefully open up more pose ability within my artwork.<br />I like her bald head too!<br /><br />As of this weekend Saturday was actually my one year dread anniversary!<br />And for those of you who are not entirely sure what a dread anniversary is it means Jan. 23rd 2009 was the day i began locking my hair into dreads for some very personal reasons: Health and Happiness!<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4302047055/" title="One year dread anniversary by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="One year dread anniversary" height="500" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2784/4302047055_3b5e9da397.jpg" width="335" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4302795312/" title="One year dread anniversary by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="One year dread anniversary" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4012/4302795312_9806c3d5ca.jpg" width="335" /></a><br />I would have to say dreadin up my hair was probably one of the most healthy/positively influential things i have done for my body/mind. I went into the process with a few different interests in mind: culture- dreadlocks have played an important part in the spiritual routines of different cultures all over the world from the beginning to the new age. The Celtic druids, Buddhas, sadhus, Nazarities and Rasta's + more of this world have all seen and recognised in their own way the power that we all hold within. In similar and different ways all these cultures have embraced dread locking as a way to focus in and own personal power, cleanse and purify the spirit, recognize and remember tradition and elder wisdom. I have seen more and more people of different ethnicity dreading up their hair in recent times. Granted, some people do it purely for the look...i feel a great many people are doing it as a wake up call for themselves and for others + doing it in a way that initiates them into a healthier/sustainable living routine while sometimes committing ones self to a greater spiritual path sometimes involving sacrifice and the recognition of roots.<br />Dreadlocks were certainly a way for me to live healthier- it inspired me to stop using common hair care products whose chemical concoctions not only poison our bodies but our water and earth. I now wash my hair less( one time a week, and that does not mean i bathe only once a week...a bathe every day. its called a shower cap people!) which has allowed my scalp to reclaim its rule over itself and produce and maintain healthy hair/scalp with natural bodily oils. the human body is an amazing machine and its really surprising how healthy one can be when you leave off using chemicals and allow your body to actually cleans and care for its self. As far as care products go i will sometimes wash/rinse or dab on throughout the day some essential all natural oils such as tea tree oil(keep away dander/scalp problems + moisturize) and calandual oil( moisture and strengthen hair) but other then that its all hands off. I just let my dreads do their own thing. Since i have stopped using shampoos and conditioners my scalp has become healthier, not to mention i am not breaking out on my face, shoulders and back anymore.<br />...Sure, i do get some nasty looks from random people on the street, not to mention people tend to lable me as a certain type of person but largely i have felt an overwhelming network of support from friends and family. However, really i did this for myself and no one else and perhaps most importantly they feel right for me and i am looking forward to growing with my locks through the years.<br /><br />So i will leave off on that note.<br />Best wishes and much love,<br />-Chelsea Rose

Its been awhile! Lots of updates and Hello to 2010.

Some time has passed since my last blog update...so much that its now 2010! Strange indeed....<br />Saying goodbye to 2009 was bittersweet. So much awesomeness happened in that year including my first ever solo gallery show, the selling of a bunch of my acrylic paintings + the expansion of my life in Portland and my artistic direction. Still, i welcome the new year with excitement at the possibilities of new beginnings, fresh starts and aspirations. I am truly hoping on finishing a new acrylic painting series by the end of winter in hopes that i can find a spot to exhibited it come summer( details more to come.)<br />.....i wanted to take a little time here to tell you all that i sold another one of my big pieces just a day shy of the new year.<br />This is the one that sold:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/3834663088/" title="River Spirit by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="River Spirit" height="500" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3292/3834663088_27ef289156.jpg" width="375"></a><br />Yes, the "River Spirit", 18"x24" original acrylic painting has found a good home with a local <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error">Portlander</span>.<br />The woman had contacted me through our <a href="http://www.lucidopticlab.etsy.com/"><strong><span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">Etsy</span> Shop</strong></a>, saying that she lived very close to T.Ruth <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">Artspace</span> where i had my solo show up for 2+ months and that she thoroughly enjoyed seeing my artwork hung up on her daily walks. She said one night she had a powerful dream involving the "River Spirit", and after that really felt the need to buy the painting. Her boyfriend had the idea to buy the painting for her birthday but when he went to the gallery to buy it, it was soon after my solo show was taken down so my work was gone. Instead he bought her a bunch of my <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/LucidOpticLab?section_id=5498941"><strong>art prints</strong></a> through our shop. Still, she wanted the painting and ended up contacting me via <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">etsy</span>. I was able to hand deliver the painting, which was something special to be able to meet the buyer face to face. What a trip! This was very exciting and inspiring for me and has really only renewed and heightened my creative drive.<br /><br />....I have felt like i have been seriously neglecting all of my various painting projects ever since i started working on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/sets/72157623003286474/"><strong>my body painting/photography project</strong></a>. I should be finished with it by the end of this month i believe. This will be my first fabric painting project so i am interested to see how it turns out.<br /><br />I also worked on starting up a new painting based on this illustration:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/3969853379/" title="Queen of the Bog Lilly by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Queen of the Bog Lilly" height="500" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2588/3969853379_c480cb45bc.jpg" width="371" /></a><br />...So far i have painted the background purple and projected/transferred the illustration onto the canvas( size 14"x14"). When i get home today i will begin my first <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">experimentation</span> with filling the drawing in with color. Its a good shot of some of the back painting work too.)<br /><br />.....So thats it for now but there is still more to come.<br />However I do have other projects i need to concentrate on. My paint that I ordered a week ago should be getting here today which means I will have no more excuses to not finish my Harpy painting. So yes, I need to work on that and also need to work on getting color onto Wonder's woodsman cloak. All of this photo project bizz has really been inspiring, super exhausting and time consuming- but it feels wonderful. I am looking forward to my next shoot with another lovely woman which is scheduled for this coming Saturday the 19th. I need to call T.Ruth and make sure I can still use her art gallery space for the shoot. This time I plan on starting the painting process much earlier so that we can be ready to do the shoot by 12 thus utilizing some of the space's natural window lighting. In the first shoot with Ann Marie I had not anticipated that the painting would take 3+ hours.
