Messy Art room, New screen print shirts and holiday creations

So that three day weekend was greatly appreciated.<br />I didn't do much other then watch movies, munch out on home made cookies, Cheddar biscuits and samosas but i did manage to start a new painting!<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/5296013016/" title="Messy art room by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Messy art room" height="415" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5247/5296013016_c41c24de79.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />...you can see the very beginnings of my new acrylic piece in this photo. Its going to have lots of purples and blues, it would seem. You might also notice what a mess my painting corner is. The entire art room needs a good cleaning and re organizing. Hopefully i can get to that soon. i feel like i can create much more smoothly with a nice fresh, organized area. Lots of new hand made/hand printed silkscreen shirts up for grabs.<br /><br />We have been super busy between the Goddess in All of Us art opening, printing new shirts and creating for the Holidays.<br />I tried my hand at silk painting for the first time:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/5296012846/" title="My silk painting experiment by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="My silk painting experiment" height="500" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5169/5296012846_4ebf1161e1.jpg" width="335" /></a><br />It was really fun. I painted 10 of these scarves. I enjoyed the way the silk paint seemed to spread like watercolor. I used an oil gutta resist to create the line work. I did dislike how fumey and toxic the gutta was so i think i will try the water based resist next time. It was a one night event in conjunction with NW 23rd third Thursday <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_4" class="blsp-spelling-error">artwalk</span>. I guess its easy to misjudge how much work you really have when you have a lot of it stashed away in a cluttered art room in a small apartment :)<br />I was <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_6" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">tottally</span> blown away!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidopticlab/5189325538/" title="Untitled by Lucid Optic Lab, on Flickr"><img alt="" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4090/5189325538_830d698a93.jpg" width="347" /></a><br />I snapped this photo of Danny with his <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_7" class="blsp-spelling-error">Ebru</span> master <a href="http://data.fineartstudioonline.com/dataviewer.asp?keyvalue=6613"><strong><span id="SPELLING_ERROR_8" class="blsp-spelling-error">Reza</span> <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_9" class="blsp-spelling-error">Antoszewska</span></strong></a><br />She seemed very excited/impressed with his work....<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_10" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">which</span> is made quite evident from the big grin. The devine Dyad WIP and The Buddha Project

Busy Busy Busy.<br />....just started this new painting the other day:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/5098382308/" title="Dyad- work in progress by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Dyad- work in progress" height="335" src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1254/5098382308_60e999f1f5.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />...Been calling this one the Devine Dyad.<br />right now its color base is acrylic with India ink outlines. i have already started painting in the body so the color is pink and purple- very fleshy. This is different from my usual green or blue skinned goddess/fae creatures. I really do love painting my creatures colors like blue and green because this gives them a "raceless" foundation which I think helps the viewer see them as "other" then flesh and bone. New Drawing, tie dye, Buddha Project work in porgress photos

I am pleased to introduce you to Her Imperil Majesty, Elephantress:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/5092110535/" title="Elephantress by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Elephantress" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4104/5092110535_c0f17a89bf.jpg" width="391" /></a><br />Original pen and ink drawing<br />by Chelsea Rose<br /><br />.....I have always though Elephants held an air of majestic and regal grace so honestly putting one in a fancy court dress wasn't to big of a stretch for my imagination. Also, Elephants are my cousin Allie's fave animal as well as my boyfriends....so i had to try my hand at them at least once. I like her fancy trunk glove/sock or cozy..whatever you want to call it :P<br /><br />...so yes, as you can see i did a bit of drawing over the weekend. I also prepped some painting surfaces for new works in progress. The final color went on as a light lime green for the Buddha's highlights. I have no posted pictures of that yet but i imagine they will be up soon for viewing.<br />Neat huh?<br /><br />In other news i had rather nostalgic moment this weekend when digging around in various boxes in the art room i came across news articles that my mom must have saved for me from the West side Weekly- one of which a photo of me participating in a sculpting class at age 7 is shown on the front cover followed by a quote in the article saying "I love doing the painting, you can make anything you want. What I love most of all is getting the paint on myself."<br />The photo below the main photo was taken of me at age 7 also in one of the Arts Mecca's painting classes:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/5091891982/" title="Venice Arts Mecca by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Venice Arts Mecca" height="242" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4124/5091891982_169d116579.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />( to read the snip it of article just click on this thumbnail and view large.)<br />...the Venice Arts Mecca was an amazing gift. their classes were more like free-for alls where freedom of expression reigned supreme before rules of technique. The program was given freely to the "underprivileged" youths of Venice, CA. I took many classes there ranging from photography, dark room, Polaroid transfer, painting, clay work, creative writing and more.<br />I wish that more programs like this existed today, throughout the world- they really do make a huge difference. <a href="http://www.venice-arts.org/" rel="nofollow">http://www.venice-arts.org/</a><br /><br />...and Lastly:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/5091727931/" title="Saying goodbye to summer by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Saying goodbye to summer" height="285" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4104/5091727931_3a3a10c395.jpg" width="450" /></a><br />I know summer is long gone but its just begun to really feel that way. The wind is cold, first frost approaches, my morning glory vines have died out including my other potted wildflower garden. This weekend i took down the wasted vines, flowers...consolidated the left of soil and stacked empty pots. My patio is now bare save for my basil, chamomile and Chile plants which i will be bringing inside very soon in hopes of keeping them alive for winter. while i am sad to watch the "abundance" of summer come to a close i am elated at the changes in the air, the glow of fall in the trees...the inevitable "rest" of winter.<br />....but its photos like this, taken in summer's height that will help get through the coming months of getting up in the dark chill( but i really do love winter!!)...and spring is such a miracle- to watch the green roll back in with such force! i cant wait to have my morning glory vines growing and flowering again. this time i will start the seeds indoors as soon as spring hits. should be good.<br /><br />So that's it for now, more coming soon as always.<br /><br />...and remember kids, Drop Paint, Not Bombs.<br />-Chelsea Rose<br />Lucid Optic Lab

Weekend Projects and Play- mermaid painting, silkscreen creation

Twas a relaxing birthday weekend at home spent hanging out on the patio and working on art projects in the morning while it was cool- then movie watching marathon + lots of naps in the A/C bedroom now deemed "the cave"- as the days got super hot.<br /><br />I got more work done on my mermaid painting:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4894961340/" title="Mermaid-work in progress by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Mermaid-work in progress" height="379" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4077/4894961340_97bc34f1e9.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />I darkened the ocean a lot more so that i could make the bubbles more glowy. Also added some new bubbles in and a couple jets of shimmery lil bubbles. Everything is very very rough so i need to go in and shape everything with more color and shading. I have also decided i need to change her flesh tone to a more pale/blue tint to reflect the fact that she is submerged in water. Still need to decide on how i want her hand to lay on her tail and what i want/if anything sprouting from the top of her third eye. plus more bubbles shall be added as well.<br /><br />While i was painting Danny was working on an art project of his:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4894942328/" title="In the art room by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="In the art room" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4098/4894942328_1b8edb4aa4.jpg" width="335" /></a><br />He made this huge silkscreen frame and stretched the mesh himself- the frame is pretty much as tall as i am. Its been awhile! Lots of updates and Hello to 2010.

Some time has passed since my last blog update...so much that its now 2010! Strange indeed....<br />Saying goodbye to 2009 was bittersweet. So much awesomeness happened in that year including my first ever solo gallery show, the selling of a bunch of my acrylic paintings + the expansion of my life in Portland and my artistic direction. Still, i welcome the new year with excitement at the possibilities of new beginnings, fresh starts and aspirations. I am truly hoping on finishing a new acrylic painting series by the end of winter in hopes that i can find a spot to exhibited it come summer( details more to come.)<br />.....i wanted to take a little time here to tell you all that i sold another one of my big pieces just a day shy of the new year.<br />This is the one that sold:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/3834663088/" title="River Spirit by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="River Spirit" height="500" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3292/3834663088_27ef289156.jpg" width="375"></a><br />Yes, the "River Spirit", 18"x24" original acrylic painting has found a good home with a local <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error">Portlander</span>.<br />The woman had contacted me through our <a href="http://www.lucidopticlab.etsy.com/"><strong><span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">Etsy</span> Shop</strong></a>, saying that she lived very close to T.Ruth <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">Artspace</span> where i had my solo show up for 2+ months and that she thoroughly enjoyed seeing my artwork hung up on her daily walks. She said one night she had a powerful dream involving the "River Spirit", and after that really felt the need to buy the painting. Her boyfriend had the idea to buy the painting for her birthday but when he went to the gallery to buy it, it was soon after my solo show was taken down so my work was gone. Instead he bought her a bunch of my <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/LucidOpticLab?section_id=5498941"><strong>art prints</strong></a> through our shop. Still, she wanted the painting and ended up contacting me via <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">etsy</span>. I was able to hand deliver the painting, which was something special to be able to meet the buyer face to face. What a trip! This was very exciting and inspiring for me and has really only renewed and heightened my creative drive.<br /><br />....I have felt like i have been seriously neglecting all of my various painting projects ever since i started working on <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/sets/72157623003286474/"><strong>my body painting/photography project</strong></a>. I should be finished with it by the end of this month i believe. This will be my first fabric painting project so i am interested to see how it turns out.<br /><br />I also worked on starting up a new painting based on this illustration:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/3969853379/" title="Queen of the Bog Lilly by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Queen of the Bog Lilly" height="500" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2588/3969853379_c480cb45bc.jpg" width="371" /></a><br />...So far i have painted the background purple and projected/transferred the illustration onto the canvas( size 14"x14"). When i get home today i will begin my first <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">experimentation</span> with filling the drawing in with color. But alas, its currently my means to pay bills and buy food. But still... when I get home I tend to wallow all too much. And now that its getting dark early I find my body trying to hibernate.<br />So the battle rages on: the temptation to lay my weary bones down and be a drone VS the need to be fruitful and true to self.<br />I think I am winning over the vile sloth tendencies and I am producing my art work. Its wonderful being partnered with another artist. Danny and I help each other with inspiration. But there are some really truly amazing outside influence that easily jump start our weary artist hands into frantic action. This outside influence is you! You, who ever you are who is reading this blog. You, who enjoy our work enough to support it by buying prints, tie-dye, paintings, screen prints from our little <a href="http://www.lucidopticlab.etsy.com/"><strong>etsy shop</strong></a>. I cant communicate how much the support means to us and perhaps to the world for that matter. In this day and age where so much is mass produced by mega corps. and sold cut throat cheap I feel people who are willing to support hand made art and craft with their hard earned dollars are in truth heroes and freedom fighters. Finished projects and new tie-dye in our shop!

So I finished my "Wind Spirit" painting over the weekend.<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4087543017/" title="Waiting for the varnish to dry by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Waiting for the varnish to dry" height="500" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2545/4087543017_b1dbcfa543.jpg" width="413" /></a><br />This is just a quick snapshot that Danny took while Sushi-cat and I were waiting for the first layer of gloss varnish to dry. The flash from the camera really washed out all the colors in the painting, but you get the idea. Hopefully today we will have some nice high quality details pictures of the painting. Its a 14"x14" acrylic painting done on stretched canvas. I'm sellin this one for $150.00 so let me know if you are interested and we will work out the details.<br /><br />Otherwise, Danny also finished a major project of his:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidopticlab/4086614865/" title="laughing buddha screen print poster by Lucid Optic Lab, on Flickr"><img alt="laughing buddha screen print poster" height="500" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2752/4086614865_b681df3f09.jpg" width="379" /></a><br />Laughing Buddha screen print poster 11"x14"<br />This is a completely hand made, hand printed 5 color silk screen print poster made by Danny.<br />Its extremely limited eddition. He only printed 11 on Bristol paper.<br />To create this Poster he had burned 5 different silk screens, each one a layer that makes up the image. During the summer we were so busy sellin our goods at all the local art fairs and farmers market we ended up neglecting our poor little etsy shop. But now that fall is here the rains have begun and we are trapped inside with not much else to do. Im also considering doing some experimenting with these trippy face mandalas that i have been drawing just recently.
