Photographing my Goddesses in the woods is a fascinating experience because mother nature is constantly adding her artistic twist in each photo. I love the way she played with light in both of these captures. In the first she’s creating a enchanting waterfall of light that kisses my model's profile. In the second i love how mother nature lit up the third eye so dramatically. Cant wait to get outside for another body art shoot and do some more collaborating with the forces that be!<br /><br />In other news, we rocked a booth for Last Thursday Artwalk on Alberta st. Come say hi if you can!<br /><br />However this past weekend was an amazingly beautiful experience. I went to the Rainbow Gathering in Washington. It was massive, and the quality of human interaction was profound. We ventured for about 2 hours to get there, which is nothing compared to those who drove in from all over the country. Every state had people there to represent their land. Our tent was set in the forest next to the base of some massive trees and right next to the African drum tent which held the rhythms till sunrise. We had tons of fun drumming, wandering, and making friends. But alas, work called us home early. I hope to gather for the next Rainbow, where ever it might land...and make a few weeks trip out of it. My 1st time selling at the Portland Saturday Market

I did have some great purchases and some amazing conversations with people who stopped by my booth. I also was thrilled about how friendly my neighbor vendors were and how easy I made friends with them. The crafty vendors seemed to greatly out weighed the art vendors but i did find a few and had a great time talking, comparing notes and getting some great advice.<br />Speaking of advice, a few days before the market weekend I did a faerie oracle reading in which i pulled 'Iris of the Rainbow' and her message was pretty much "be aware that a lot of work is ahead but the outcome is glorious and fruitful." So im going to keep at it! I don't think its profitable to go every weekend,rain or shine so i will be a lil more choosy on which weekends i vend. But i am very excited that my artwork passed the jury, i survived my 1st weekend and that im now set for the rest of the year.<br />How was your weekend? any new ventures?<br />Many blessings,<br />-Chelsea Rose

Art Hanging for my Goddess in All of Us body art photography show

Wow! I fear it has been awhile since my last post. I have been pretty busy working out the details of the Goddess in All of Us body art photography gallery opening.<br />It seems like everything is falling into place now and the actual art opening is really just about a week away! whoaaa.....<br /><br />On Tuesday we hung all the photos:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/5248346256/" title="Goddess In All Of Us - hanging by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Goddess In All Of Us - hanging" height="239" src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5005/5248346256_c972526481.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />This picture was snapped during the final moments of hanging. More Body Painting photos and the plotting of self publishing a book

So, I have my fist exhibition of my body art/photography women's study series coming up in December. All of the sudden it dawned on me that i only have a couple months before its show time so i have begun pushing myself into the final stages of the creative process. There are a lot of things to consider right now such as how many pages i want my book to be( i am thinking around 50 and that includes title page, introduction and an acknowledgements page.) So i have to go through those 53 and lower my catch to the Golden chosen. Meanwhile, Danny is working on the design and layout of the book and i have to begin writing an intro or asking someone else to write one for me. Once i have that all together i get to take a trip to the print shop and figure out if i want hard cover or soft, what kind of paper to have it all printed on and so on. Then i need to figure out how many pieces i should be printing for the gallery show/exhibition- what size they will be and how i will be framing and mattering them.<br />My head is spinning a little :)<br />So thats one big project i am devoting energy towards.<br />I am also working on a small painting and getting my stuff ready for Last Thursday Art walk on Alberta st which is this week!<br />Also, i am working on a music project with <a href="http://www.myspace.com/bonesandall"><strong>Bone and All</strong></a> where i am reciting poetry along with the super spacey psychedelic noise. I am not sure when the final tracks will be mastered but i will certainly be sharing when its all ready.<br />....So thats my news update!<br />Stay tuned.<br />-Chelsea Rose

More Queen Bead body painting photos + mermaid painting in progress + Evolve Mushroom screen print +patio garden pics

Its getting closer to the end of July and the beginning of August. Queen Bead will be singing with her reggae band tonight at a club in Washington. It will be my first time seeing her preform and I cant wait!<br /><br />I started working on a mermaid painting last week and haven't gotten much done on it since then:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4816821249/" title="work in progress by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="work in progress" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4139/4816821249_4de12df6d0.jpg" width="335" /></a><br />...i haven't even finished putting down the first beginnings of color and I'm already not liking where it is going.<br />I am doing this painting based off of my "love thy self" pen and ink drawing of a mermaid hugging herself:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/3879438665/" title="love thy self by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="love thy self" height="236" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3437/3879438665_387a2a4a05_m.jpg" width="240" /></a><br />( pen and ink drawing by Chelsea Rose)<br />....I initially started out painting her with a light green skin tone but she was melding way too much with the light blue background. I am trying out a natural pinkish skin tone and not liking it at all. However, it may just be too early to tell. What i really need to do is add some more layers of colors and shadow before i make any rash judgments but its been hard to find motivation to work on her unfortunately. However i will have plenty of time to stare her down and do some work on Saturday when Danny and I go and watch <a href="http://www.truthartspace.com/"><strong>T.Ruth art space</strong></a> gallery from 1-6pm. i really do enjoy painting in the back while doing my best at greeting people when they filter in to look at all the art.<br /><br />In other news Danny made a new screen print from his "Evolve" design. The background is his faery star screen, the mushroom his most recent silkscreen creation.<br /><br />I am in love with the new prints and lucked out by getting the first "evolve" print on a shirt- all for myself:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4817360726/" title="Evolve mushroom screen print by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Evolve mushroom screen print" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4097/4817360726_6cc57cb0fb.jpg" width="381" /></a><br />Isn't it lovely? If you want a print of your own feel fee to send in a custom order with t-shirt size/color and paint color preferences!<br /><br />....Did you notice the hat? well i recently got it in order to help shield myself from the constant bombardments of sunburns that summers tend to inflict on my pale skin. When i came home with it the other day Danny thought it was ridiculously huge and likened it to wearing a sombrero! But i do love it and my good friend Dr. Bob gave me the cool paper blue flower to adorn the hat with. I think the hat will do well for the long bus rides home in the sun, the summer hikes we take and all the hours ill be spending sitting in direct sun at the various art fairs of the season.<br /><br />I also have a couple patio garden snapshots to share:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4816733119/" title="patio garden by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="patio garden" height="335" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4140/4816733119_9a91dcb328.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />Its a true luxury to have a lil outside patio to ourselves amongst the pitfalls of apartment living. Although i dream of working an actual piece of land to plant all sorts of edibles I am making due with what space i do have. i started a potted herb garden from seeds( i think i will do starts next time since seed growing is magical to witness but a slow slow thing.) So far i have the following herbs sprouting happily: cilantro, chile, basil and chamomile. However i am most excited about the morning glory vine that i planted. The morning glory vine have been so quick to grow, some of their leafy vines already climbed the lattice and are beginning to work their way around the top of the patio rail. I was very excited the other morning to find my first two buds ready to burst:<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4816735619/" title="Morning Glory buds by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Morning Glory buds" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4076/4816735619_3e60020d6d.jpg" width="353" /></a><br />Morning Glory is my favorite sort of flower. I wish i was small enough to live in their enchanting purple trumpet blooms.<br /><br />On that note i will break off this post.<br />Its supposed to be a hot weekend so who knows how much i will get done really...hopefully some painting, maybe some hiking but i am sure there will be a lot of time spent in the shade drinking some iced herbal tea, watching the plants on the patio grow.<br /><br />Much love to all,<br />-Chelsea Rose

Queen Bead arrived around 10:30am and we got to painting after plugging in a few fans in the back of the gallery.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidopticlab/4783627794/" title="body painting in progress by Lucid Optic Lab, on Flickr"><img alt="body painting in progress" height="335" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4079/4783627794_49e370726d.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />(process shot taken by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/lucidopticlab"><strong>Danny</strong></a> )<br />I was truly amazed at how quickly this body painting was finished. We got started around 10:30am and finished around 1:30pm, then took pictures till around 2:30/3pm.<br /><br />Queen Bead was my 12 body painting for this series/women's study and I am very pleased with the photos and how it all turned out.<br /><br />I was positively bursting with inspiration as soon as i met this woman a couple months ago at the art fair "Craft in the Village" in Vancouver WA. She was sitting at a booth with her son selling colored pencil and ink illustrations of powerful queens, empresses and goddesses. I was entranced by her persona and energy and couldn't help but run up and ask if she might be interested in modeling for my body painting women's study. To my glee she instantly seemed interested in the project saying it sounds like just the thing she needs for her CD/Album cover art! Turns out <strong>she is an inspired reggae singer- her stage name being Queen Bead. 3 day weekend of art- body painting, art fairs and new acrylic on canvas!

Thank goodness for 3 day weekends! With this realization in mind i posted a craigslist ad asking for elderly women who might be interested in participating in my project. As always it was wondrous getting to know my model and it was uncanny how much we had in common in thoughts, feelings and intention. She seemed to have a real love for life and was well equipped to roll with life's punches through the years. We both agreed that everything happens for a reason and there is little point in regretting things. We also seemed to think that the body is a person's temple and that as women age the beauty matures and changes anew- our bodies becoming road maps showing the signs of a life lived well and to the fullest.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4766248732/" title="Wise Woman by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Wise Woman" height="500" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4076/4766248732_8bb392631e.jpg" width="335" /></a><br />Wise Woman<br />(body painting and photography by Chelsea Rose<br />Model: Suzanne Owens-Duval)<br /><br />I took over 500 photos of Suzanne in little over an hour and a half and i have been having a wonderful time in my spare moments this past weekend sifting through the shots and polishing the keepers. It was predicted to rain but that sure didn't stop us! Our lil fair still went strong with live music and a dozen or more vendors braving the storm. It did rain buckets for an half an hour but we survived and were rewarded with blue sky and sun for the rest of the day. We did pretty well on sales considering! And as always it was wonderful fun to meet and hang out with all the other local artists.<br /><br />On Saturday Danny and I watched T.Ruth Artspace gallery ( since our dear friend and the gallery owner is re cooperating from surgery.) Of course we had a blast greeting the people who walked in to enjoy the art. We all made dinner together( fresh herb salad with home made pesto sauce and tortellinis)...then we all hung out on the patio as the sun set. Then they baked the most delicious cookies and we sat around watching episode upon episode of Avatar the Last Air Bender as i dreaded one of the dear fellow's mohawk!<br /><br />All in all it was a wonderful few days!<br /><br />Now that the new week is here i am looking forward to finishing up the painting i started on Saturday and hopefully beginning a new one. So indeed...we set up a date for the body painting right away.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4719724942/" title="Body painting-process shot by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="Body painting-process shot" height="371" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4066/4719724942_28aee856e1.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />As always i had the most wonderful time getting to know my model as i painted her from head to toe. By her enchanting accent i guessed that she had exotic roots- turns out she was born and raised in the Caribbean islands thus her speech was quite musicale and fun. She is in Portland on a full scholarship for her amazing athletic abilities in sprint running...and she has the legs to prove it! Her body was one big muscle and i found within her a spring of energy that had me painting in a flurry of strokes. I actually did one of my most detailed body paintings on this women in less time then i have painted any of the other 9 woman before her. I began painting her around 10am and we finished well before 2pm and were done with the photoshoot by 3pm!<br />In many of the shots she seems to exude a wonderful balance of strength and grace often looking so regal and strong it beckons to ones mind images of warrior women. She was sooo fun to work with and i am smitten with the results.<br />I cant wait share more from out shoot- so stay tuned.<br /><br />Peace n Love,<br />-Chelsea Rose

Tender Truth-body painting and weekend tidbits

Saturday was super stormy. It rained hard for most of the day but Courtney and I were pretty cozy all cooped up and working on making her unique pregnancy portrait pictures a reality.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lucidrose/4631015154/" title="body painting process by lucidRose, on Flickr"><img alt="body painting process" height="287" src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4016/4631015154_d0da6c2a03.jpg" width="450" /></a><br />It took most of the day to get the body painting finished.<br />We started painting around 10:00am and did not finish with it till around 3:30pm.<br />Its amazing how much i get to know my models during this time period. Courtney felt that while the body painting process is a tedious one...it was a good way of honoring and better understanding how much time and patience there is inherent in genuine creation- such as the creation of a child. Patience, love and righteous intent are key to a healthy creating experience.<br />This was my second time body painting and photographing a pregnant woman but i have a feeling it will not be the last. It seems pregnant woman have a lot of interest in having their pregnancy documented in a meaningful, unique and heartfelt manner. Courtney said she thinks i should put up fliers at her pregnant yoga class to scare up more interest. I just might do that and see where it takes me!<br /><br />As far as other art projects go, i am currently a step or two away from finishing a pen and ink illustration i have been working on that is based off a very iconic symbol of prosperity: the Maneki Neko - or the Japanese fortune cat:<br /><img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/14/Manekineko1003.jpg/220px-Manekineko1003.jpg" /><br />...i should be sharing my version sometime this week if i can manage to find the time to put the last finishing touches on my drawing.<br /><br />....speaking of good fortune and prosperity- I have some great news.I am thrilled to say that my Grandmother who has been fighting lung cancer is in remission! I love you Mom Mom! Now all we have to work on is getting Pop Pop to gain some weight back and we will be in fairly good shape. :)<br /><br />I am also working on an interesting commission- a coloring book! A dear who is also a friendly blogger and etsy seller had asked that i make a coloring book for her 7 year old daughter's birthday in June. I jumped at the challenge! While i have never done a project quite like this before it sounded rather irresistible. So far i have all the coloring book pages printed out. Now i have to craft the cover and do the binding. I think it might be interesting to use a heavy watercolor paper as the cover and back...and then use a sewing machine to put in some brightly colored stitching as the binding. This is a very experimental project for me- i cant wait to see how it turns out.
